You’ll begin in the capital city of Oslo for your first two nights. Oslo is the entry way into Norway and a charming, cosmopolitan city which features a mixture of both modern and classic architecture, against a backdrop of rolling hills. Oslo has a booming contemporary art scene, some of which is highlighted at Vigeland Sculpture park, where you can meander among over 200 bronze and granite statues. In contrast to the modern, high-rise buildings the city also plays homage to its Viking roots, which can be explored at the Museum of Cultural History and the Viking Ship Museum.
We have included a guided tour to take you around the highlights of the city, disovering beautiful buildings such as the Royal Palace and the National Theatre.
The journey to your next destination is an event in itself as we suggest taking the train, firstly to Myrdal, which takes around four and a half hours, from where you will join the iconic Flåm railway, one of the world’s most beautiful train journeys. The 55-minute journey takes you on one of the steepest train lines in the world as you pass through a breath-taking landscape of steep mountains, glistening fjords and plunging waterfalls.
From here, it is a short journey to the charming, 29/2 Aurland, whose owners Tone & Bjorn await with a wonderful Norwegian welcome at this charming, family-run property. From here there are a number of different ways to explore on foot or by bike, as picnic lunches and stunning hikes await, as well as incredible views of the fjord.
We’ve included a guided hike to Turlidfossen waterfall, which is a fantastic introduction to the incredibly scenery that surrounds the property here. The following day we suggest taking to the water to explore the serene fjords by boat, taking in the near silence of your surroundings as you gaze up to the high mountain peaks, with an al fresco picnic to ease your appetite along the way. In the evening your hosts will heat up the wood-fired hot tub for your private use, so you can relax and watch the sun dip below the horizon as a delicious dinner is prepared for you.
Your next stop is the wonderful Storfjord Hotel, whose inviting sofas by the roaring open fires will make you never want to leave! There are numerous options for you to get to this next stop; we suggest taking a short 30-minute domestic flight from Sogndal to Ørsta–Volda Airport, from where it is around a 1 hour, 30 minute drive to the hotel. It is also possible to hire a car and drive the route, if you have a desire to experience the winding mountain roads and plethora of bridges, which will take around 6 hours. Alternatively, we can arrange private transfers by car or even helicopter.
During your stay at Storfjord we've included a private boat trip to the astounding Geirangerfjord; a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to stunning waterfalls as well as the Golden Route - Norway's best-known stretch of road, consisting of 11 hairpin bends and surrounded by the dramatic scenery of the Rauma district. After a change of transport, you'll experience the fjord from the water as you sail between the rising mountains, enjoying the calm, smooth waters of stillness of the area.
There are also several great hiking options close to the hotel, and the region is renowned for its untouched nature and rugged alpine peaks. After a busy day enjoying the fresh mountain air with plenty of exercise you’ll be glad to retire to the comfort of your cosy hotel for a hearty meal and restful sleep.
The drive to your next hotel is a short one, taking just over half an hour to arrive into the heart of Ålesund and the stylish boutique hotel Brosundet, located right on the harbourfront so you can truly enjoy this waterfront city. There are a number of great restaurants and café’s here, so it would be easy to relax into the slow pace of life, simply watching the daily comings and goings around you, or to quietly potter down the small streets and marvel at the pastel-coloured Art Nouveau style houses.
Away from the city, we recommend catching a Rib boat to Runde island, which is inhabited by around 150 resident puffins. This protected area also attracts thousands of sea birds, who settle themselves here during nesting season. Keep your eyes peeled in the water and on the surrounding rocks as you may be lucky enough to spot seals swimming by.
The final night of your epic itinerary is something truly special as you board a private boat, taking around one hour, to Flatflesa private island, where your lighthouse accommodation awaits. If you prefer to experience the view from above, we can also arrange for a helicopter transfer so you can get a gauge of your remote surroundings.
On the island you’ll be waited on hand and foot in your private escape with sweeping ocean views. Why not see if you can catch a local crab before hopping into the wood-fired hot tub to watch the sun set over the horizon?
