Tanzania is a large country, with a varied climate. Generally, the long rains run from March to May - the temperature is warm and the humidity is high. June to October is the long dry season, typically considered the best months for game-viewing as the wildlife is more concentrated around water sources and the grass is grazed and trampled down. Selous and southern Tanzania is typically hot and humid from December to May, without a dry period to break up the rains, so travel is not recommended during the British winter months.
This five night short get away invites you to visit two of Tanzania's lesser known gems, the Selous Game Reserve and Ruaha National Park. In terms of landscape, combining the Selous and Ruaha allow you to have two very different experiences which are connected quite simply with one short light aircraft flight. Each park offers only a handful of safari camps, and a wide variety of activities such as boat safaris, walking safaris and game drives.
After a flight to Dar es Salaam head straight for the Selous Game Reserve on a light aircraft. The Selous is one of the largest faunal reserves in the world and known primarily for its lush green waterways, home to East Africa’s highest density of hippo and crocodile. It also hosts the largest population of wild dog in East Africa.
During your two night stay, daily guided game drives and boating activities take place in the morning and evening. There are also walking opportunities where you can learn more about the smaller fauna and flora from your experienced guide. If you are looking for an adventure, a night ’fly camping’ is a must, sleeping out under the stars in a remote corner of the park.
You then fly eastwards to the heart of Tanzania, Ruaha National Park. Quite arid compared to the Selous, the focus here is on the beauty of the surrounding landscape, a true African wilderness experience.
The park is home to a huge variety of species of plants and birds and is a nature-lover’s paradise. Big cats are here in good numbers, including cheetah which you won't see in the Selous. Other species include eland, lesser kudu, and vast herds of buffalo and elephant. During your three night stay in this magnificent park enjoy twice daily game drives along the baobab scattered plains in search of lions lounging in the shade, game walks where you will learn how to track from your professional guide and each evening enjoy delicious bush dinners under the stars.
Get up close and personal with the hippos in the Selous' mighty rivers and lakes on a boat safari, perfect in the late afternoons when the wildlife often comes to the shore to drink.
For those safari aficionados who are looking for a bit more adventure, there can be nothing more exciting than spending a night in the middle of the African bush. Sleep in a mosquito net dome with all the sounds of the bush around you.
Spend your days in Ruaha searching for their resident big cats - lions lounging in the sun on the rocky kopjes, cheetah stalking their prey through the grassy savannah and a leopard lurking in the boughs of a tree.
There's nothing quite like the exhilaration of a walking safari and Ruaha National Park is a prime spot for exploring on foot.
