Laos boasts some of the most beautiful untouched natural scenery in Southeast Asia, and from Luang Prabang there are plenty of opportunities to get out and explore.
Home to hundreds of temples, pretty boutiques and quaint streets all crammed into a small town centre, Luang Prabang is a sightseer's delight and very easy to see over just a few days.
Luang Prabang can be accessed by direct flights from China, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia, making it a perfect destination to tag onto a longer Indochina itinerary.
Four days is the perfect amount of time to soak up the history and culture of this small town, and you will certainly leave wanting to see more of Laos' sleepy charm.
Laos enjoys a warm, tropical climate year-round. The cooler, drier months of the year are from November to March; however, temperatures rarely drop below 22°C during the day. Humidity is highest between May and September, when sunbursts follow tropical downpours and temperatures can climb to 35°C. However, the average year-round temperature is a pleasant 25°C.
Explore one of Southeast Asia’s best kept secrets by spending four wonderful nights right in the heart of Laos. This action-packed itinerary will introduce you to Luang Prabang, the gorgeous UNESCO World Heritage town nestled high in the mountains and home to glittering temples with low sweeping roofs and saffron-clad monks walking the streets.
Your holiday starts with a blissful two night stay right in the heart of Luang Prabang. With your guide, explore the quiet streets and French-style buildings that jostle for space with traditional wooden houses and glittering temples. With your guide, explore the gold mosaicked halls of the Royal Palace, peep into the shadowy Wat Xieng Thong and learn about the astonishing diversity of Lao culture at the Museum of Ethnology. Your full day tour can finish with either a short climb to the top of Mount Phousi to watch the sun set, or you may choose to join monks in their temple to listen to the haunting sound of their evening chanting. In the evening we recommend strolling down the main street to shop at the incredible night market and discover some local flavours on the street food street next to Indigo Café. The next day we invite you to see Luang Prabang from a local’s perspective with a river cruise on the Mekong. With your guide, head upstream on a private longtail boat, stopping at the mysterious Pak Ou caves, filled with over 4000 Buddha icons. Slowly drift back to Luang Prabang as the sun sets on another fun-filled day.
For your final two nights, take a step away from town and head into the hills, to the delightful Rosewood Luang Prabang. This unique resort is attractively spread around a central waterfall with natural swimming pools, and offers an array of different room types, from the intimate and elegantly decorated Riverside Rooms, all the way up to the hilltop Luxury Tents with sweeping views across the valley to Wat Phousi, glittering on the mountain. During your stay we have also included a day trip to the nearby Kuang Si waterfall where the water is coloured an incredible sky-blue from the mineral content of the rocks. Here you may visit the nearby sun bear sanctuary, swim in the cool water, hike to the top of the falls or simply relax with a picnic on the banks of the river until sadly, it is time to return home.
Enjoy a full day tour of the fascinating UNESCO protected city of Luang Prabang, exploring the Royal Palace, shimmering temples, ancient streets and traditional art and ethnology centre. The day culminates in a climb to the top of Phousi Hill.
