Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

The best times to visit Istanbul are in spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October), when skies are clear and temperatures are moderate. During July and August it is hot and steamy; a lot of Istanbullus head for the west and south coasts over these months and some businesses close. Biting winter winds and snow are common in winter.

Be aware that during the five-day Kurban Bayrami banks shut and ATMs can run out of money. During Ramadan business hours can be erratic. Hotel rooms skyrocket in price and are often overbooked during the Formula 1 Grand Prix in June.

Description

Perched on the western edge of Istanbul’s lively Beyoglu district, the elegant Pera Palace is remarkably preserved neo-classical hotel, steeped in history and heritage that dates back to the late 19th century.

Situated amongst the restaurants, bars and trendy enclaves of Pera, or  Beyoglu, once described as ‘little Europe’, the Pera Palace is steeped in charm and character that dates back to the ‘Golden Age’ of travel. Built by the Eastern and Orient Express Railway in 1982 for their disembarking passengers, the hotel has played host to many famous faces over the years, from visiting dignitaries to the stars of stage and screen. This sense of history and heritage has been remarkably preserved inside the grand, Neo-classical façade, seemingly unchanged (aside from modern facilities) since the 1920s. Glittering chandeliers, opulent draped fabrics and polished marble and the original (and Istanbul’s first) mechanical lift still feature throughout the hotel.

The rooms and suites are spacious and luxurious, with high ceilings, highly polished wood floors and individual décor and character. Contemporary comforts such as espresso machines, Wi-Fi and LCD televisions have been added but the rooms retain their sense of 1920s glamour and style to this day. Opt for the rooms that overlook the Golden Horn for some of the most iconic views in the city or embrace the hotel’s history with a stay in the Agatha Christie room, where she purportedly penned ‘Murder on the Orient Express’.

Dining at the Pera Palace is a sumptuous affair. Enjoy breakfast on the Orient Terrace, overlooking the Golden Horn, or partake in afternoon tea under the vaulted roof lights of the Kubbeli Lounge. French pastries and fresh coffee is served at Patisserie de Pera and elegant western-meets-Turkish fare is on the menu at the elegant Agatha Restaurant, so named for one of the hotel’s most famous guests.

After a long day exploring the wonders of Istanbul, visit the Pera Spa for a relaxing massage, steam or swim. Fitness enthusiasts will enjoy the well-equipped gymnasium with its ergonomic Technogym equipment, whilst history buffs can visit the Ataturk Museum Room, homage to the founder of the Turkish Republic and one of the most important figures in Turkey’s history.
