Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

For a small country, Jordan has an extraordinary range of climates. The best time to visit climate-wise is in spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when the daytime temperatures aren't too extreme. April is probably the best month, when temperatures are warm and wildflowers are in bloom. March can be cold and rainy in the north but is balmy by the Gulf of Aqaba and the Dead Sea.

Experiences

  • Ad Deir Monastery

For most visitors, the spectacular views of the towering Ad Deir Monastery is easily Petra's most beautiful sights, with ever-expanding horizon of surrounding mountains in sight.

  • Al Kubtha Trail

Detour from the main trail for a panoramic view of the Petra mountains, ending off with a rewarding viewpoint of the Treasury at Al-Khubtha High Place and Cistern.

  • Backdoor Walk from Little Petra

Trek via the winding back roads with panoramic desert & mountain vistas. This route allows you to beat the crowds, arriving at the famous Monastery whilst most visitors are still at the start of the site. Continue to explore the tombs, Treasury and Siq.

  • High Place of Sacrifice

See another side of Petra away from the crowd. Hike up to the High Place of Sacrifice through the Obelisk, Wadi Farasa and the Garden Tombs.

  • Kerak Castle

Built in 1161 by the Crusaders, Kerak is a perfect example of mediaeval castle design. The castle is a dark maze of stone-vaulted halls and passageways. Its most famous occupant was Reynald de Chatillon, who had a reputation for treachery and brutality.

  • Little Petra

Significantly smaller than the main site of Petra, Little Petra is nevertheless worth a visit, offering a taster of incredible Nabataean architecture.

  • Petra by Night

Petra by Night occurs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8.30pm. You enter the Siq, and the canyon which leads to the Treasury.

  • Petra by Night

Thousands of candles are lit to enhance this experience and seeing the Treasury lit up is truly an unforgettable experience.

  • Petra Kitchen

Enjoy a short taster course into the delights of Jordanian cooking.

  • Petra: Red Rose City

Spend the day exploring Petra, an ancient Nabatean capital which flourished in biblical times and dominated the Middle East caravan routes for four centuries before being assimilated into the Roman Empire in 106 A.D.

  • Shobak Castle

Shobak is an isolated Crusader castle, located around an hour north of Petra. Whilst it is more dilapidated than other castles such as Kerak, the setting is very dramatic; perched on a hillside and offering extensive views of the surrounding area.

  • Tour of Petra with a Local Guide

A two-hour tour of Petra with a private local guide which will include a walk through the Siq before moving to the Treasury (El Khazneh), the intricately carved Royal Tombs, Street of the Facades and finishing at Qasr al Bint.
