Average time to visit

Straddling the equator, Indonesia tends to have a fairly even climate year-round. Rather than four seasons, Indonesia has two – wet and dry – and there are no extremes of temperature between winter and summer. In most parts of Indonesia, the wet season falls between October and April and the dry season between May and September. December and January see Indonesia at its most humid and rain tends to come in sudden tropical downpours, but it can also rain for more prolonged periods.

To start planning your holiday to Bawah Reserve

Only accessible by seaplane, Bawah is a group of six tropical islands that feature 36 beautifully designed suites and bungalows. Surrounded by lagoons and coral reefs as well as dense jungle canopy and mangroves, this eco-hideaway is an explorers dream.

Bawah Reserve, formerly Bawah Island, is a private island experience like no other. Combining luxury design and an back-to-nature concept, it is an eco-resort made up of six islands that sit in the Anambas Islands between Malaysia and Borneo. With crystal clear waters and excellent snorkelling, this is barefoot luxury at its best.

Bawah brings a new level of luxury adventure to Indonesia with its 36 suites and overwater bungalows nestled within the islands' lush green jungle. Located on previously uninhabited islands, there are thirteen incredible beaches here all for yourself.

The suites themselves are elegant yet understated in a true Robinson Crusoe style. Each complete with their own balcony, the Garden Suite, Beachfront Suite and Deluxe Beachfront Villa have all been built using bamboo and canvas tented-like material and are extremely spacious. However, it is the overwater bungalows that really stand out; perfect for couples wanting privacy and suspended over the shallow coral reef.

Elsewhere at the reserve, there is also a spa complete with four treatment rooms, a tennis court, yoga deck and plenty of non-motorised water sports including kayaking and paddle boarding. In the evenings there's even an open air cinema to enjoy a romantic evening watching a film under the stars.

Food is also a big part of the Bawah experience and there are plenty of dining options to enjoy. Please note, your stay at Bawah is on an all-inclusive basis. Choose from The Boat House Bar & Restaurant, the beautiful Treetop Club House Restaurant or head to The Grouper Beach & Pool Bar for light snacks throughout the day. There's even a lookout bar named after the famous French author Jules Verne, known for writings about extraordinary voyages.

Head out and explore for yourself, making your way along the wooden walkways over the azure blue lagoons. There are three sheltered lagoons at Bawah, perfect for snorkelling. Further afield, the resort's diving instructors can take you on diving expeditions to see the incredible marine life that inhabits these shores or a guide can take you on a hike around the island.

Be it honeymoon couples or families with teens wanting to explore, Bawah is a perfect paradise which can be easily combined with a stay in Singapore or other parts of Indonesia and beyond.

From the moment you fly over Bawah Island, you know you're heading towards something very special. Bawah Reserve, found in the Anambas Archipelago, is a brand new luxury island escape which has already received tremendous praise -from myself included. My two night stay at Bawah Reserve was a truly memorable one, and I only wish I had stayed much longer.

The island is made up of a series of both Garden and Beach Suites, and Over-Water Villas, all of which are beautifully designed with all the luxuries needed for an island retreat. The rooms are incredibly spacious, well air-conditioned and extremely comfortable. When we first arrived, we were shown to our suite by our wonderful helper Wawaan, who was an absolute delight. In fact, all the staff that we met during our stay were fantastic and really did make our stay extra special!

The food at Bawah Reserve is excellent and easily comparable to other luxury hotels' offerings. We enjoyed an incredible beach BBQ on our first night which was an easily a highlight of our whole trip. For me it is the activities at Bawah which are really standout. During our stay we enjoyed an outdoor movie, snorkelled around the reef, went on a sunrise hike to the top of the island, kayaked around the island in search of turtles, and enjoyed a wonderful sundowners boat cruise.

However, the best experience by far was our picnic lunch on one of the property's private beaches on a nearby island. I don't want to give away too much, but it really is an absolute must of any stay on Bawah Reserve.
Ultimately, Bawah Reserve is the ultimate island getaway, particularly for those who have done the Maldives and are looking for something completely different and unique.
