Easily one of the prettiest and most comfortable options in a town with very few hotels
Full of character, La Villa is ideal for those who prefer a historic hotel
La Villa is by no means a luxurious hotel but it makes up for this with charm and original features
This is an ideal place to rest for those wanting to get off-the-beaten track in Cambodia
The pool is an added benefit and so too the tranquil garden
We love the antique and art deco furniture as it's in keeping with the historic nature of Battambang
Cambodia is hot all year round and the best time to visit is during the dry season, which runs from November to April. It starts to get wetter in May and the wettest months are September and October. It is still possible to visit during this time as rain usually falls as short sharp storms. November is a fantastic month to visit Cambodia as it is very green after the rainy season and the lakes and rivers are full of water.
What La Villa lacks in luxury it makes up for with colonial charm. Constructed in the 1930s the building has had a remarkable history, providing a home to a family as well as quarters for the Vietnamese army. It's now a pretty seven-room boutique hotel.
La Villa was originally built in the 1930s and has the intricate detail and grandeur synonymous with this time during the French colonial period. The building acted as a family home until the coup d'etat in 1975 as well as the general quarters for the Vietnamese army during the Khmer Rouge period. More recently the house has been converted into what is now a simple but pretty boutique hotel that's a characterful base for exploring Battambang.
The entire property is arguably very simple, so don't expect 5* luxury as you'll be disappointed. What we love about it are the decorative and original tiled floors, the antique four poster beds, the art-deco furniture and the crisp swimming pool that sits in a fruit laden garden. Service can be a little slow but we didn't mind that, we felt it was in keeping with the sleepy atmosphere of the town. It's as though time has stood still. The property has an authentic charm and feels in harmony with its surroundings.
Sitting close to the banks of the Sanker River, La Villa is easily one of the best options in a town with few good hotels. It's also home to one of the best restaurants in the area as well. For those who want to explore a more hidden part of Cambodia, and don't mind living without luxury for a few days, this is a fantastic option.
There are 7 rooms in total; 6 are in the main house with the other sitting in a charming building by the swimming pool. All rooms boast a wooden four poster bed or a traditional Khmer bed, en-suite bathrooms, air conditioning and art deco furniture. On the ground floor (rooms 1, 2 and 7) rooms are a little smaller with queen size beds so we recommend going for room 3 or 4 on the first floor, or rooms 5 or 6 on the top floor. Please note that despite being full of character, rooms are very simple. However we feel that they are some of the best in Battambang.
La Villa welcomes children however there are no specific facilities for them. Several rooms can accommodate one or two extra beds making it a good option for families wanting to stay in Battambang.
Being a small boutique hotel means there are very few facilities, however there is a swimming pool as well as a good restaurant.
Located within fertile plains, Battambang is officially Cambodia's second city. It sits 40km west of Tonle Sap Lake and is less than a 3-hour drive from Siem Reap.
