Belmond Sanctuary Lodge is the only hotel located adjacent to the ancient citadel of Machu Picchu and therefore a very convenient base for visiting the awe-inspiring ruins and the beautiful surrounding area.

Run by the prestigious Belmond group (formerly Orient Express Hotels) and a member of the Leading Hotels of the World, Belmond Sanctuary Lodge is just steps from the entrance to the Inca ruins at Machu Picchu, one of the world’s most important heritage sites and Huayna Picchu mountain. The hotel’s privileged location allows guests to enjoy magical sunrises and sunsets in relative solitude at the ruins before and after the majority of other visitors have arrived or departed.

The Belmond Sanctuary Lodge at Machu Picchu offers 29 rooms and two suites, 12 of which have breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. For relaxing there is an interior garden with a variety of flowers and orchids and stunning panoramic views. The Tampu restaurant, exclusive to hotel guests, features stylish Andean decoration and stonework and offers mouthwatering Peruvian cuisine. Tinkuy restaurant offers a delicious daily buffet lunch and the Tampu bar serves refreshing drinks throughout the day and evening.

The hotel offers guided tours of Machu Picchu, Huanya Picchu, the impressive mountain that towers over the ancient citadel and the Temple of the Moon amongst others. One can unwind after a day of exploring one of the new seven wonders of the world with a massage using traditional Incan techniques.

Belmond Sanctuary Lodge offers 29 guest rooms and two presidential suites. All rooms have crisp linens, king-size or twin beds, ensuite marble bathroom, wireless internet and TV and DVD player. The superior rooms are comfortably furnished and have courtyard views and a patio, the deluxe mountain view rooms enjoy vistas across the mountains and surrounding jungle. The two presidential suites are the most spacious and have a separate living area with a large furnished terrace enjoying mountain views.

Children are welcomed but there are no specific facilities. Given the terrain and the high altitude exploration of the surrounding area, this is a hotel best suited for older children.

The hotel has two restaurants serving authentic Peruvian and international cuisine, a bar, a gift shop and gorgeous gardens overlooking the surrounding landscape. The hotel offers a range of massages which are very welcomed at the end of a busy day exploring the Inca citadel. There is also a relaxation space for yoga and meditation in the inspiring surroundings.

Of course the main highlight of a stay at the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge are the tours and treks around Machu Picchu, Huanya Picchu, the Sun Gate, the Temple of the Moon, Putucusi and the thermal baths in Aguas Calientes. The trekking is challenging at times and goes to high altitude so participants should have a good level of fitness. Other activities include a Pachamama tribute ceremony, coca tea leaf reading, star gazing with a resident astrologist, meditation and yoga, and for younger guests, treasure hunts in the hotel's gardens.

With this hotel it's a case of LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION! This is the closest hotel to the Machu Picchu ruins, located adjacent to the ticket office and entry turnstiles. The lodge is very comfortable with lovely gardens overlooking the Valley, though important to note there are no views of the ruins from any of the rooms here. Enjoy a Pisco sour making class and a wonderful a la carte dinner in their intimate restaurant, and be first into the park in the morning!

Belmond is renowned for bagging the best locations and the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge is no exception. Merely steps away from the staggering UNESCO heritage site of Machu Picchu, the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge allows guests to explore in their own time and avoid the busiest times. Guests have their own restaurant, gardens to relax in, an orchid trail, hot tub and outdoor massage area with blinding views of the mountains. The rooms may not be that large (the hotel cannot change the structure of the building) but its the location that counts.
