November to April brings the best weather, downpours are rare, and there’s usually enough sun to get fabulous photographs of the ice, with bright sunshine most days. In March and April, Autumn colours are spectacular, as the lenga on upper slopes of the mountains turns scarlet. The majority of the region is closed for winter June to September, when weather makes the area very inhospitable. Bear in mind, though, that weather in Patagonia is completely unpredictable, since the winds coming over the Andes are constantly changing.
Occupying a breathtaking position in Argentina's hiking and climbing capital, Explora El Chaltén is the perfect base for exploring the mountains and glaciers of wild Patagonia. This luxurious all-inclusive lodge offers adventure and comfort in abundance.
Hike through pristine wilderness and observe vast glaciers as you discover one of the true highlights of Argentine Patagonia. Explora El Chaltén acts as a base camp for those wishing to explore this spectacular region, its skyline dominated by the iconic peaks of Mount Fitz Roy. Adventure is the name of the game at this fully inclusive lodge, designed to maximise your time in El Chaltén on a range of guided excursions - all of which are included in your stay so you can do as much or as little as you like. Included activities range from overland trips by vehicle, rock climbing and ice trekking, as well as more traditional hiking through the surrounding valleys and mountain ranges, all designed to take you truly off the beaten path. Itineraries are totally flexible, depending on the weather and your requirements, and every day you will be given the opportunity to plan the choice of activities for the following day.
The lodge itself boasts just 20 rooms and suites, replicating the style of traditional Patagonian estancias with a modern twist, synonymous with the Explora brand. All are spacious and equipped with plenty of space for all your gear, as well as ensuite bathrooms and large windows facing towards the marconi glacier and Electrico valley. The common areas are designed to make the most of the views and are complete with a bar, restaurant and cosy lounge area. There is also a spa for guests to indulge and unwind on return from days out hiking.
We recommend a minimum stay of four nights to make the most out of your time in El Chaltén.
There are 17 standard rooms and 3 suites, each boasting amazing views towards the Eléctrico Valley, the Marconi Glacier, and the surrounding mountain range. All are simple yet stylish and spacious, offering en-suite bathrooms with robes, slippers and hair dryers. All rooms can accommodate either a king bed or twin beds and an additional bed for a child. Please note there is no WiFi or TV available in the rooms as the lodge is designed to help you switch off. WiFi is available in the common areas.
No specific childcare facilities available. We would recommend a minimum age of 8 and above to stay at the hotel.
Facilities include a cosy lounge area with breathtaking views, a bar and a shop where you can stock up on gear or souvenirs. There is also a restaurant where breakfast, lunch and dinner are served, and a spa with hydromassage, sauna and treatment room.
A range of full and half-day excursions are included in your stay, guaranteeing to make the most of the region regardless of how active you wish to be. Enjoy a range of hiking, ice trekking, overland trips by road and even rock climbing.
