Though a luxurious lodge, RockFig retains an authentic connection to the beauty of its surrounds through the stone, wood and natural colours of its rooms
With only six suites, it can be booked exclusively or by room, succeeding in both creating a home-from-home for families or an intimate get-away for couples
The communal areas are stylish yet welcoming, with inviting sofas, an outdoor pizza oven and an open kitchen
Game drives and walking safaris are led by expert guides and trackers, and are ideal for families who are given a private vehicle, meaning children of all ages can join in
There is no bad time to go on safari in the Kruger National Park. The experience does, however, change from month to month. In the summer months (October to March), it gets very hot. The verdant vistas are all the more spectacular because of the rains, but this means that the foliage is denser, water is more abundant and game is therefore trickier to see. There are lots of beautiful migratory birds during the summer months. While the daytime temperature in the winter months (May to September) is ideal, it does get a little chilly at night and in the early morning.
This intimate safari lodge combines elegance with natural materials to create a luxurious yet rustic home-from-home at the heart of the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve.
Tucked away in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, adjoining the Kruger National Park, this cosy lodge achieves a delicate balance of refined elegance and rustic authenticity in both the accommodation and the communal areas. An inviting swimming pool overlooks the waterhole, while sun loungers offer a chance to unwind after a morning’s game drive, gazing out over the treetop canopy of the reserve.
The six suites of the lodge can be booked individually or as a whole, the latter creating a private home for a family or group of friends. Built from solid materials, including exposed stone, the rooms feel supremely comfortable while the colours and natural materials provide a link to the beauty of the wilderness that surrounds them. An outdoor shower continues this tie to nature, as does the elegant freestanding bath on the veranda.
The lounge and picturesque al fresco dining area will soon feel like home, their plump sofas and personal touches creating a welcoming space in which to feast on delicious home-cooked meals, curl up with a book or simply watch the colours of the plains change throughout the day. For cooler days, a large fireplace in the lounge creates a cosy, homely atmosphere, while the outdoor lounge area is ideal for the summer’s warmth. Cool off in the pool before enjoying a slice of pizza from the outdoor oven or sit back on a lounger with a crisp glass of South African wine.
While you could be forgiven for spending your time at RockFig simply enjoying the serene surrounds and comfortable elegance of the lodge, the wildlife of Timbavati awaits. Game drives and walks with expert guides and trackers bring the bush to life, while custom-built vehicles allow a window space for each guest, with only four guests per vehicle. Families are assigned their own private vehicle, meaning there are no age restrictions and timings can be adjusted to their needs. A walking tour is a chance to get closer to the smaller inhabitants of Timbavati, to learn about the plants and their medicinal uses as well as observe larger animals.
Afternoon tea at The Mount Nelson hotel is a must do whilst staying in Cape Town. The Mount Nelson Hotel serves tea from 14.30 onwards, book for a vast variety of sandwiches, pastries, and loose-leaf teas.
