Ancient Penjikent was an important trading region on the Silk Road back in the 8th century and the hometown of Rudaki, a famous Persian poet. Also enjoy a visit to the UNESCO-listed Sarazm settlement.

Archaeologists believed that the site dated as far back as 1500BC. Penjikent was a centre of the Songdian empire one of the most important pre-Islamic Persian empire in Central Asia. Penjikent is also the birthplace of Rudaki, known as "father of Persian poetry", and visit Rudaki Museum to learn more about the 10th century poet.
