Sea, sun & family fun in Cyprus

04 December 2017

Cyprus has long been celebrated as a superlative destination for families. Its long stretches of sandy beach are ideal for parents looking for some well deserved time out whilst adventurous youngsters are bound to be kept amused by the catalogue of water sports on offer. Throughout the summer months, Cyprus is a hot spot for stealing away with the family on a holiday defined by al fresco dining, classic Mediterranean hospitality and activities galore. This autumn, travel experts Grace, Lucy and Tristan escaped to Cyprus’ sun soaked shores to visit our favourite properties on the island.

Leaving a drizzly, grey London morning behind, we arrived on the island of Cyprus in jumpers and jeans, immediately feeling the warm air rushing to our faces as we stepped off the plane. Upon arriving at Anassa, we changed out of our unsuitable winter clothes and took a seat on the terrace of Anassa’s wonderful Armonia bar. Our late lunch there hit the spot – a traditional meze selection teamed with a fresh Greek salad of such a high standard it would be hard to find in any other corner of the Med.

Fully fuelled, it was time to start exploring Cyprus. We were on a mission to find out exactly why Cyprus is the place to go with your family next summer. And I think we found the answer! No matter what your family want – it has something to suit your style.

For those who are looking for understated luxury, Anassa is the one for you. Its Thalassa Spa will cleanse your mind, body and soul whilst the little ones will be spoilt for choice with the endless selection of activities to enjoy. Our Scott Dunn Explorers kids’ club will do all the work – whether it be movie nights, playing tennis, scuba diving or learning how to paddle board. You can walk from the pool to the beach in seconds, you’ll really feel away from it all.

At Anassa, relaxation is at the heart of everything, whether it be lying on a sun lounger in the gardens, by the pool or in the bar listening to live music. However, if you are looking to get back to nature and do something a little more active, take a 30-minute trip to Lara Bay beach where you can help the Marine Turtle Conservation Project based there. This is a fantastic experience allowing you to help monitor and protect turtles as they hatch on the aptly named ‘Turtle Beach’.

If a beach isn’t a necessity for you, the Almyra is incredible value for a summer get away. Our Scott Dunn Explorers kids’ club is matched with a great outdoor play area (including a zip line) making it the perfect family friendly destination. We can certainly see why our families return yearly! Almyra prides itself on being family orientated, their pool has a canopy to protect children from the sun and there’s also a shallow pool for the little ones to enjoy (they won’t even miss the beach)! There are plenty of room configurations to maximise family time and the Almyra team are always on hand to help guests in every way from booking excursions to supplying accessories for babies upon arrival.

Almyra has an incredibly sleek edge, its chic design by Thanos Michaelides is extremely fresh and contemporary. Whilst there, we were thoroughly spoilt and dined at two of its four restaurants. If you’re looking for traditional Cypriot fare, where better to dine than in a seafront taverna Ouzeri, listening to live music on the acoustic guitar whilst sampling the local cuisine of fresh fish and Cypriot meze. Or for those looking for a little more edge, Alymra has a sophisticated option, Notios, serving Japanese-Mediterranean fusion cuisine. It doesn’t get much better than dining al fresco whilst tucking into dishes from all over the world.

The best time to visit Cyprus is between May and October, with long, hot sunny days and slightly cooler evenings. Whilst the weather is still beautiful in spring and autumn, you may need a jumper in the evenings and it’s worth taking an umbrella just in case of showers. One thing’s for sure though, no matter what time of year you go, the Cypriot people are warm and welcoming, confirming Cyprus as a must-visit destination for families.
