We are proud to support a wonderful charity called CHICKS, a national children’s charity which provides some of the most disadvantaged children an young carers in the UK with free, week-long breaks in the countryside and by the sea. We wanted to highlight their work in light of UK Young Carers Day on 31st January, a day to recognise over 700,000 young people in the UK who support and care for family members.

Since its inception in 1992, CHICKS has hosted retreats for nearly 16,000 young people, giving kids from a variety of backgrounds the chance to enjoy an unforgettable break, get stuck in with some fantastic activities and return home with lifelong memories and countless new friends. New research by the Carers Trust shows that young carers and young adult carers mental health is affected by the pressures of their caring role, all too often the mental health support they needed just wasn’t there. And even when support was available, their situation was often made worse by people or professionals who didn’t understand the specific difficulties and challenges faced by young people as a result of their caring role.

CHICKS supports hundreds of young carers every year, giving them the opportunity to make positive childhood memories. For children like Josie* this programe was not only a welcome break but also a fun trip surrounded by those understood what she was going through. In 2017, 45% of the children referred to CHICKS had caring responsibilities. A week away from home gives them the chance to have fun and enjoy new experiences without any of the worries and everyday tasks that they usually face.

We proudly support CHICKS through the Scott Dunn Chairtable Fund and this year, they’re planning to give hundreds more children like Josie* the chance to be a child again!

*name has been changed to protect the child.

The total cost per break per child is £970. In order to provide these much-needed breaks for more children like Josie, they rely wholly on the generosity of supporters – they receive no government funding. This year alone they need to raise £1.7 million in order to facilitate all the respite breaks planned.
