Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

In the western, central and eastern Bhutan you will mostly experience cold European-like weather. Winter lasts here from November to March. The Monsoon occurs between June and August when the temperature is normally between 8° and 21°C. October and November are arguably the best months, when the monsoon has passed and the skies are clear. The spring months of March, April and May are best for the flora, but it can be stormy as the monsoon builds up for July-September.

This itinerary unfolds the cultural heritage and dramatic beauty of Bhutan in style. Enjoy a range of exclusive spiritual experiences, hop onboard a helicopter ride from Gangtey to Paro, all while you are based in the legendary service and attention of Aman hotels throughout.

  1. Days 1-2: Thimphu

Your private journey begins in Thimphu, just an-hour drive from Paro airport with your private chauffeur and guide who will show you through the highlights of this stunning capital: National Institute of Traditional Medicine, Folk Heritage, Takin Preserve and the Buddha Dordenma statue.

    Accommodation: Amankora Thimphu (1 night)

  2. Days 2-4: Punakha

Crossing over the magnificent Dochu La pass with its 108 memorial stupas, your journey continues into the cultivated valley of Punakha. Enjoy a short hike across the beautiful rice terraces into Chimmi Lhakhang temple before retreating to your stylish lodge to enjoy the rest of your afternoon. You may want to take a dip into Amankora's stunning infinity pool which overlooks directly into the rice terraces.

A new day beckons with a short hike along the river banks of Mo Chu, passing through rice, cabbage and chilli fields before emerging into the Khansam Yulley Temple. Here, you can sit back in awe to admire the picturesque view of the Mo Chu Valley. On the way down, you will pass through a small village with farmers hard at work and through a forest awashed with colourful butterflies before crossing back into the Mo Chu river and visit the impressive Punakha Dzong, undoubtedly a major highlight in Bhutan.

After a rest in your lodge, we embark on an evening prayer at a Buddhist monastery. Witnessing the saffron-clad monks chanting traditional prayers before they meditate is a spiritual moment you should definitely experience at least once in your life!

    Accommodation: Amankora Punakha (2 nights)

  3. Days 4-6: Gangtey

Your journey continues further east into Gangtey, with picturesque glacial valley where the rare black-necked cranes migrate here annually from the Tibetan plateau. Enjoy a stunning nature walk and a visit to Gangtey Goemba.

Tonight, you will participate in the lighting of 108 butter candles and receive a personal blessing from a head priest at Gangtey Monastery. The practice of lighting butter lamps have long been associated to represent reliefs from suffering on your way to find the enlightenment.

Your second day in Gangtey will lead you through clusters of Longtey village houses, bamboo and rhododendron forest to a stunning viewpoint at the end of your climb. On your way down, you can choose to be driven back to your lodge or enjoy another 3-5 hours of hiking towards the idyllic Kumbu village.

Afterwards, visit a Bhutanese farmer in his traditional potato shed for a unique Bhutanese bath experience, accompanied by fire-roasted stones while you indulge with a bowl of potato chips harvested from the very same field. Conclude the night with a traditional Bhutanese dinner at the potato shed, amidst twinkling candles and all warmed up with a traditional bhukari or wood-burning stove.

    Accommodation: Amankora Gangtey (2 nights)

  4. Helicopter flight from Gangtey to Paro

Making your way back from Gangtey to Paro, spread your wing across the Dragon Kingdom on a scenic one-hour helicopter ride. Feel the awe of the winding rivers, lush valleys and the enigmatic snow-capped Himalayas in a spectacular fashion.

  5. Days 6-8: Paro

In Paro, enjoy a 90-minute hike to Zurig Lhakhang, stopping at Rinpung Zhong and crossing a cantilever bridge marked with giant stupas. After a picnic lunch, you can participate in a game of darts and archery, the national sports of Bhutan.

We have saved the best for your final day. Perched at a dramatic cliff, the famed Tiger's Nest Monastery is a rewarding two-hour hike. Afterwards, we return to your Amankora lodge.

Amankora Paro is the largest of all Aman's Bhutan lodges and it also has the most comprehensive spa features including a sauna, steam room, five treatment rooms with hot stone baths and a glass-walled yoga suite. Conclude your final night by indulging in the luxurious spa before leaving on your flight home the next morning.
