Here is our checklist of things you mustn’t miss out on:

  1. Heliski – whether it’s a day in the Italian Alps, 5 days in Canada or 2 weeks in Alaska, this has surely got to be top of anyone’s list. Fat skis, guide, blue skies and waist-deep powder; heaven on a mountain.
  2. Buy a season pass – If you do more than 3 weeks skiing a season, buy a season pass. Whether you intend to stay the season or simply return again and again to the same resort, it’s commitment to the ski cause. Life changing stuff.
  3. Get first tracks – be the first up the lifts after a dump of snow and enjoy the thrills and spills of first tracks. For example, board the Whistler Village Gondola at 7:30am and head up to the Roundhouse Lodge for a delicious, mountain-sized breakfast buffet. Then get your fill of fresh powder or perfectly groomed corduroy on the upper mountain before everyone else is even out of bed. Smug happy.
  4. Après ski like there’s no tomorrow – Austria is well-known for its fabulous après ski parties, so be sure not to miss out on The Mooserwirt action in St Anton for starters. From mid-afternoon, pumping Alpenpop entertains up to 1,000 people dancing on the tables and benches outside, while inside wooden balconies look down onto a dancefloor with a multi-million pound “Ministry of sound” light system . Or alternatiely, head to the ski boot bop in Corvara, Dolomites, Italy. From 4pm, eurotrash music, laughter and songs can be heard in and around the area. There’s nothing better than a boogie in your ski/board boots and a stagger back to your chalet in time for supper.
  5. Ski the Southern Hemisphere. South America – head to the highest ski resort in the world – Chacaltaya (5421m). At an altitude where oxygen is scarce and breathing difficult, the world’s highest ski resort attracts die-hard skiers from around the world. Otherwise, try Chile or Argentina for some less dizzy alternatives. How about trying the adventure capital of the world, Queenstown in New Zealand where you can ski by day, bungy by night – not for the faint hearted.
  6. “Do lunch” in a different country - If you’re staying in Zermatt, pop over to Cervinia for some authentic pizza and pasta. Or if skiing in La Rosière, head across to its Italian counterpart, La Thuile. Don’t forget your passport!
  7. North American champagne powder – some of the lightest powder in the world. Once you’ve sampled, you know you’ve been spoilt.
  8. Ride the Cresta Run in St Moritz – one of the biggest thrill rides of your life. With speeds of over 53 mph, the exhilaration of this head-first bobsleigh will get your adrenaline rushing.
  9. Experience a ski tour or day with a ski guide – push your ski limits and head off with a professional guide to experience some of the best off-piste out there. Discover the Tarentaise Tour, Haute Route...
  10. Paragliding - you can do this in many of the resorts - from the heights of the mountain tops, saw out over the slopes and peacefully glide above the pistes, aiming to catch thermals to keep you up, before heading to the bottom of the valley for a gentle landing...you'll never forget stunning views.
  11. (Flirt with a ski instructor – enough said.)
