The best time to combine South Africa with Namibia is between September & October or March to May when you can expect warm and settled weather in both countries. December - February in Namibia is very hot and can see temperatures reaching 38 degrees Celsius usually accompanied with heavy rains. June to August can see cooler conditions in Cape Town with rain, while Namibia is settled and dry with temperatures averaging 25 degrees Celsius during the day but dropping below 10 degrees Celsius at night.
This South Africa and Namibia adventure covers some incredible spots in southern Africa, from the ‘Big Five’ in the non-malarial Madikwe Game Reserve, to the huge red dunes of the Namibian desert in Sossusvlei, as well as some incredible experiences for the whole family, before ending back in South Africa to explore the lively city of Cape Town.
We think the best way to start any African holiday is with a safari. Starting at the malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve, you will have three nights to experience some action-packed game viewing with some excellent chances of ‘Big Five’ action and much more. This is a great reserve for families, and those with children over the age of 16 will be able to head out on food on a guided bush walk, offering you an up close and personal view of the bush.
From Madikwe you will fly back to Johannesburg and fly to Namibia where you will spend one night in Windhoek before your Namibian portion of the trip begins. This is an excellent chance to recharge and relax after some early mornings on safari.
Today your Namibian adventure starts with a light aircraft flight down in the world-famous dunes at Sossusvlei, home to the UNESCO world heritage site Dead Vlei. For three days, spend time exploring the unique landscapes and incredible scenery. For some extra special experiences keen horse riders could take a trip over the sand dunes, or, for some excellent photographic opportunities take to the skies in a hot air balloon (these experiences are extra).
Next up is Namibia’s Skeleton coast and the colourful town of Swakopmund. As an old colonial town, the blend of Germanic and African influence on the architecture results in a wonderfully unique mix. Aside from spending lazy afternoons exploring the town itself there is also a huge amount to do here from quad biking into almost inaccessible parts of the Namib Desert and learning a little bit more about this unique desert eco system to kayaking with seals and dolphins in the calm waters of the lagoon surrounding Pelican Point Light house.
From here, you will fly from the nearby town of Walvis Bay back to South Africa, and this time to the cosmopolitan city of Cape Town for the final part of your trip. Set right in the heart of Cape Town the private apartments at More Quarters are the perfect base to explore this beautiful city from, with all the perks of a hotel but with the freedom to come and go as you please and at your own pace. During your stay in Cape Town there is always something to do, from climbing Table Mountain to exploring the Cape Point peninsular and visiting the penguins at Boulders beach. This is a fantastic adventure for the whole family offering plenty of variety for everyone.
Madikwe Safari Lodge wants to create an environment for children & parents where they can tailor their stay based on exactly what everyone feels like doing or what opportunity may presents itself at the time.
The Madikwe Game Reserve is an incredible 'Big 5' wilderness area. Lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, white and black rhino, and the critically endangered Africa wild dog are just some of the amazing sightings you can enjoy in this 75 000 hectare reserve.
Great white shark cage diving is an experience like no other. To get up close to the ocean's number one predator in its natural environment is a humbling experience you will never forget.
Desert Homestead has a super stable of horses, and offers morning and afternoon rides in the reserve; these are tailored to all abilities, and you can often find yourself riding alongside a herd of gemsbok or springbok.
The Lagoon at Walvis Bay offers a marine haven for birds and marine creatures. A morning kayak safari, when the water is calm is one of the best ways to observe the Cape fur seal colonies & flamingos. Dolphins and pelicans are also regularly spotted.
This half day tour sets off into Swakopmund's desert terrain in search of its resident fauna. Your guide will seek out fascinating creatures such as specially adapted beetles, legless lizards and geckos. Particularly popular for families.
For the adrenaline junky, paragliding over Cape Town is the ultimate way to witness incredible views of the city. Take off from Lions Head or Signal Hill and let your instructor do the flying while you sit back and simply take it all in.
There are few places on earth where you can enjoy an experience quite like this. Get up close to the breeding colony of penguins, share their little sandy beach and even paddle into the sea to swim with them.
On the edge of the Namib-Naukluft are the iconic dunes of Sossusvlei, a dune sea slowly marching towards the Atlantic Ocean.
Explore the remote and wild coastline south of Swakopmund and discover the dramatic rolling dunes and lagoons teeming with bird life at Sandwich Harbour.
