Rishikesh
Set in the foothills of the Himalayas, and centred around the holy River Ganges, Rishikesh is a pilgrimage site for Hindus as well as attracting western travellers who follow in the footsteps of The Beatles in search of spiritual guidance, yoga and meditation. With a laidback charm and picturesque hillside setting, it is a calming escape from the heat of the plains.
Much of Rishikesh’s life revolves around the river, with the fire ceremony of the evening aarti, and colourful temples spread along its banks. For a more active pursuit, the fast-flowing river has also become popular for white-water rafting, while the pine-forested hills offer excellent hiking.
