Veliky Novgorod Tour
Veliky Novgorod is the Birthplace of Russia and a centre of ancient treasures. Visit one of the oldest kremlins in Russia and see the beautiful cathedral of St Sophia before heading to St George’s Monastery, a medieval complex dating back to 1030.
Drive to Veliky Novogorod, the Birthplace of Russia. It was in this city, in 862, that Prince Rurik proclaimed the modern Russian state. Today, it is a charming city whose historical centre has been UNESCO listed. During your tour of Novgorod, as it is commonly known, you will visit one of the oldest kremlins in Russia, dating back to 864. A walk along the ancient walls will reward you with stunning views. You will also see the cathedral of St Sophia, which dominates the kremlin; its white-stone façade is topped with a bright green roof and gold domes. Continue to the Yuriev (or St George’s) Monastery, a medieval religious complex built in 1030, which is set along the Volkhov River in scenic surrounds. The cathedral is the focal point, a rectangular building topped with three domes and elaborately decorated with frescoes, some of which date back to the 12th century.
