The Trinity Lavra of St Sergius monastery is the main attraction, an architectural masterpiece initiated by one of Russia’s most revered saints, St Sergius of Radonezh This Orthodox monastery has played a significant role in the religious history of Russia, and its blue and gold onion domes and white-stone buildings still attract a large number of pilgrims. The original wooden cathedral was razed to the ground by the Tartars, but the 15th century brick walls still stand, and the monastery acted as architectural inspiration for the Kremlin’s Cathedral of the Assumption in Moscow.
