Pogankini Palaty, Izborsk and Pechory

Pscov, Russia

Take a tour through Russia’s history by visiting the ancient treasures of Pogankini Palaty and ruined fortress of Izborsk. The gold onion domes of Pechory’s monastery are home to 12 churches and are surrounded by old, monastic hermit caves.

Visit Pogankini Palaty, a great example of medieval architecture which houses a rich collection of ancient treasures, including 14th-17th century paintings. Continue to Izborsk, home to an ancient settlement and a stone fortress set on Zheravya Hill. Visit the Izborsk Fortress which dates back to the 14th century. Originally a wooden construction, today you can see the ruined stone walls that were built shortly after as a watchtower and armoury. The fortress also had a nativity church.  You will also get the opportunity to sample the healing waters of Slovensky Springs, also known as the Springs of the 12 Apostles.

Founded in 1472, Pechory has an amazing cave monastery, one of the most famous and oldest still-functioning monasteries in Russia. Its building is a glittering array of gold onion domes, underneath which you will find ten churches. It is also possible to take a tour of the surrounding caves, which were first settled by local hermits.
