Enjoy an evening opera or ballet performance at one of the world’s greatest theatres, The Bolshoi. The theatre has been entrancing audiences since Empress Catherine II allowed private performances for Moscow prosecutor Prince Pyotr Urusovat in 1776. The current building dates back to 1856 when Vincenzo Bellini's opera I Puritani was performed for the coronation of Emperor Alexander II. Today, the theatre is world-renowned for its acoustic qualities, state-of-the-art equipment and orchestra pit which can accommodate up to 130 musicians. Major renovation projects have also restored the building to its former, ornate glory. The Bolshoi makes it its mission to celebrate Russian culture through recitals of famous operas and ballets such as Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, as well as showcasing unique artistic performances for worldwide audiences.
