Itinerary

Discover Peru's mysterious pre-Inca history on this in depth journey through the country's north, taking in incredible fortresses, museums, tombs and learning about these fascinating civilisations and their legacy. Explore the high Andes, trek through cloudforest and marvel at canyons and waterfalls along the way as you get off the beaten path.

  1. Fly to Lima

  2. Days 1-2: Lima

Begin in Lima, Peru’s capital city, staying for one night to recover from your international flight. Pay a visit to the Larco Museum with a private guide, which houses a vast collection of ceramics and artefacts from Peru’s pre-Inca civilisations and offers a wonderful insight into the Moche cultures, brought to life by your specialist guide.

    Accommodation: Atemporal (1 night)

  3. Days 2-4: Trujillo

Fly to Trujillo and check in to your hotel, ready to head out and explore. Trujillo city itself is rather industrial but is a perfect base for discovering the region’s desert ruins which are truly impressive and surprisingly well preserved by the desert heat. A private guide will take you out to Huacas del sol y la Luna, huge temples which date back to the Moche era and still boast coloured frescoes. Discover the Huaca el Dragon and continue to the fishing village of Huanchaco for lunch where you can still observe local fishermen heading out to sea on their traditional canoes made from reeds. After lunch you will be taken to Chan Chan, an incredible adobe citadel which remains from the Chimu culture and is the largest of the remaining Chimu ruins.

Accommodation: Downtown Costa del Sol Trujillo (2 nights)

  4. Days 4-6: Chiclayo

Next stop is Chiclayo, stopping on route at El Brujo archaeological complex, famous for its brightly coloured murals and the Lady of Cao museum which is home to the tattooed mummy of the first female Moche ruler. Once in Chiclayo, you will also enjoy a guided tour of the lavish Tombs of Sipan, a 1,700 year old Moche tomb where vast quantities of gold and silver were discovered and can be seen at the Royal Tombs museum, along with Tucume to visit the archaeological complex of the Valley of the Pyramids.

Accommodation: Casa Andina Select Chiclayo (2 nights)

  5. Days 6-8: Cocachimba & Gocta

A long but scenic drive brings you to Gocta Andes Lodge in Cocachimba, which is ideally placed to visit the Gocta waterfalls which sit surrounded by dramatic rock formations and deep within the cloudforest. Trek to the falls through valleys and sugar plantations, into the forest where you may see sloth, monkeys and an array of birdlife. After approx. 2 hours of hiking you will reach the base of the falls, which are one of the tallest in the world. If you’re feeling brave you may wish to take a dip in the pool at the base of the falls!

    Accommodation: Gocta Lodge (2 nights)

  6. Days 8-10: Leymebamba

From Cocachimba, drive to Leymebamba, stopping on route to visit the Karija Sarcophogi, a burial site for important Chachapoya warriors which are represented by the huge funerary statues set high up on the mountainside, shaped like humans. Once you arrive in Leymebamba we recommend a visit to the museum which houses an incredible 219 mummies. A full day expedition is included to the hilltop fortress of Kuelap which sits at an altitude of 3,030m / 9,940ft and boasts stunning views of the surrounding countryside and cloudforest. Take the cable car up to this enigmatic site and admire the towering walls and well-preserved temples.

    Accommodation: Kentitambo Lodge (2 nights)

  7. Days 10-11: Chachapoyas

Your final stop is Chachapoyas. Along the way you will stop to enjoy close-up views of the tombs of Ravesh which look like miniature houses, perched on the clifftop and dating back to 1,200AD. On arrival you will check into your hotel and will have some time at your leisure to explore the historical centre, ending with a final visit out to the 1,000m / 3,280ft deep Sonche Canyon. Fly back to Lima on your final day and connect with your flight home, or choose to add more time on here should you prefer.

Accommodation: La Casona Monsante (1 night)
