Average time to visit
The best time to visit the Colca Canyon is usually during the dry season, May through November: The Colca Valley is lush and green just after the heavy rains from January to March. Though sunny during the day, it can also get quite cold (below freezing) at night so make sure to pack some warm clothing.
If you intend to do some river rafting, the best time to go is during the raining season, when the river is at its highest (January through April).

The exclusive Belmond Las Casitas (formerly Casitas del Colca) is a haven of peace and tranquillity in the Colca Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world and wonderful walking country. The property is around 3 hours from Arequipa, in Peru's south.
Belmond Las Casitas (formerly Las Casitas del Colca) has a breathtaking location overlooking the Colca Canyon on an 11-hectare estate, bordered on each side by a ravine with spectacular terrace views. The lodge boasts 20 luxury casitas (120sqm each) dotted throughout the property. Each casita has a private terrace with plunge pool, fireplace, indoor and outdoor shower, and a hot tub on the veranda - ideal for relaxing after a day exploring the delights of the Colca Canyon. The casitas have been built and decorated with the beauty of the locality in mind. The emphasis has been placed on natural materials; walls are made of brick whilst roofs are constructed of wood and handcrafted tiles.
Situated adjacent to the free form swimming pool, the Samay Spa features a sauna, two single treatment rooms, one double treatment room and a treatment suite complete with a soaking tub. This calming and quiet space is inspired by the Inca world and offers a range of treatments using indigenous products from the Colca Valley and the highlands of Peru.
The Colca Canyon area is so untouched that many local traditions remain and it is an ideal location for retreats, treks and tours of the valley. Explore by bicycle, on foot or on horseback and take in the impressive canyon scenery. An unmissable highlight of any stay is to watch the magnificent condors soaring up the canyon walls on thermals rising in the mornings. Belmond Las Casitas strives to make as little impact as possible on its local environment and is largely self-sufficient, with a small farm, a vegetable garden and a trout pond on the land, providing fresh organic produce.
Accommodation at Belmond Las Casitas is made up of 20 luxury casitas. Each casita features a luxury bedroom and seating area, a large bathroom with bathtub and indoor and outdoor shower and a private terrace with heated plunge pool. The casitas combine traditional decoration with modern technology, including Wi-Fi, iPod deck and under floor heating. There is one Presidential Casita, which has a separate living and dining room, with amazing views over the Colca valley.
Children are welcome at Belmond Las Casitas and are sure to enjoy the on-site farm and some of the soft adventure activities. Two of the casitas are joined by a lobby, making ideal accommodation for a family.
Belmond Las Casitas has its own farm, vegetable garden and trout pond, providing much of the organic produce used in the hotel's restaurant. Delicious Peruvian inspired cuisine is served in the main building or al-fresco on the terrace, with amazing views over the valley. For some luxury pampering the excellent Samay Spa offers an extensive range of relaxing Andean-inspired treatments, including signature treatments using herbs and plants grown on-site. There is also an outdoor free form pool.
Belmond Las Casitas has an on-site farm, vegetable garden and trout pond, which guests are welcome to visit and perhaps even catch a fish for dinner or help feed the baby alpacas. Guests may explore the extensive grounds on foot, by bike or on horseback or may wish to venture out further into the Colca Canyon, discovering spectacular ravines, hidden lagoons and fascinating local flora and fauna. Visits can also be made to see the condors and to local Andean villages.

Belmond Las Casitas, located in the beautiful Colca Valley, is the perfect hotel for a peaceful getaway. The very secluded property sits just above the river offering stunning 360 degree views of the valley around you. Each casita comes equipped with outdoor hot tub so you can soak in the night while stargazing at the beautiful skies above. This property epitomizes luxury and relaxation in Peru!
No longer the sole preserve of backpackers and climbers, the Peruvian Andes have recently been crowned with luxurious retreats like this remote Orient-Express outpost in Colca Canyon, which is twice as deep as the Grand Canyon. It's tough to access (a three-hour drive from the nearest airport, in Arequipa) but worth the detour. While other area hotels are lavishly refurbished colonial villas, this one goes native. Twenty discrete chalets sit halfway up the canyon, sharing the altitude with soaring condors. Rooms, furnished in earthy colors with a pastoral polish, are supremely yet simply comfortable: a terra-cotta bowl of corn cobs, a vase of wild grasses, a panier of logs. Nights can be chilly at 9,800 feet above sea level, so you'll find wood-burning fireplaces, heated laja-stone floors, and piping-hot plunge pools on the private terraces. Staff slip a woolen hot water bottle between the bedsheets in the evening. Adventure here is the alpaca-soft sort, with eager-to-please local guides, support vehicles (carrying oxygen), and gourmet picnic meals. Or just look up and wish upon a shooting star in the gin-clear southern sky. The remote setting ensures glimpses of traditional Quechuan life, with the men embroidering and the women working the land, and the organic garden means fresh ingredients for local dishes like quinoa soup, stuffed peppers, and grilled guinea pig.—2009 Hot List
