Insider's View

The restaurant is housed in the former British consulate and it is over 100 years old.

I loved how the Anantara Chiang Mai was so close to the centre of town, it made visiting the night market and other attractions so easy, yet was such a stylish and peaceful retreat to go back to.

Take advantage of your close proximity to the night market, which is a unique experience and a fantastic way to soak up the culture of the city.

Stay in a suite to benefit from some extra goodies during your stay.

Whatever happens - be adventurous and try their amazing Thai wine. Developed in the winery outside Hua Hin, Monsoon Valley is a stunning light and totally enjoyable white wine.

You must ensure to swim in the pool as the light goes. An evening cocktail while drying off is also advised!

Indulge in a signature massage in the wonderful spa, perfect after a busy day exploring the temples and markets

See if you can find the hidden room in the colonial spy themed bar The Service 1921 housed in the old British Consulate building!

Description

Located in within the city, Anantara Chiang Mai (formerly the Chedi) stylishly combines a resort feel with a prime location. It is in the heart of beautiful scenery and traditional culture and a stone's throw from the bustle of the night markets.

Located on the banks of the Mae Ping River, the Anantara Chiang Mai takes a contemporary approach to design and is among the most elegant and stylish of hotels in Northern Thailand. Add to this the gentle, unobtrusive but impeccable service and a superb restaurant specialising in innovative Northern Thai cuisine, and you have a slick city retreat.

Each room and suite at Anantara Chiang Mai has a minimalist décor with teak furnishings, open plan bathrooms and balconies offering incredible views of the river and mountains. The luxurious suites are twice the size of the deluxe rooms, with a comfy seating area and exclusive club service inclusive of a complimentary mini bar.

The resort has a delightful riverside pool where you can enjoy some rest and relaxation time. This pool is only open to guests aged 12 or older. For families with children under 12, there is a lovely rooftop pool in the resort's Serviced Suites building over the road. There are also plenty of sporting facilities such as aerobics classes and a Muay Thai boxing class. You can also learn how to give a Thai massage or even how to artfully carve fruit to impress at a dinner party upon return.

The central location of Anantara Chiang Mai makes the surrounding area easy to explore and there are endless activities such as fascinating hill tribe visits or specialist cooking schools.

This centrally located hotel occupies its own secluded slice along Chiang Mai's Ping River.  Photogenic from every angle, it was built around the old colonial era British Consulate, which has been repurposed into an upscale Indian and Peruvian restaurant downstairs and the super chic colonial spy themed Service 1921 bar upstairs.  Featuring sleepy views of the river from the spa and adults only pool in the original wing, and a sleek new all ages infinity pool on the roof of its adjacent new wing, this hotel impresses from literally top to bottom.  Steps from the action it still manages to feel miles from chaos.  With solid options for couples and families, it's an excellent choice for travelers of all stripes.

Perfectly located on the edge of the main town, the Anantara Chiang Mai provides a peaceful place to relax while giving the opportunity to explore the local night markets and other restaurants by foot. There's some award winning dining options here and a secret service themed bar you must check out called The Service 1921. There's afternoon tea provided everyday and a sunset dance performed in the evenings at the main lobby

This city hotel is seconds away from the night market and a brisk walk from the old city. Once within the gates of the hotel, the staff will do everything possible to make you feel welcome. The pool and spa look out over the bridge. The bridge is lit up so beautifully at night and the pool is surrounded by flames making the evening swim seriously special.

The Anantara is a city hotel however its location on the river, amazing living wall of greenery on the Spa, incredible pool lit by flares at night and Thai and Indian restaurant housed in the old colonial teak building that used to be the home of the British Consulate, all give this hotel a unique character and style. Sitting on the banks of the river by candlelight watching the bridge change colour with an incredible light show whilst sampling the most wonderful Thai food and wine as a great way to start our trip to Chiangmai.

Anantara Chiang Mai is a great option if you want to stay at the heart of the city. Being just minutes away from the night market, temples, restaurants and bars it is ideally located to explore Chiang Mai. But despite being so close to the hustle and bustle, as soon as you enter the resort's grounds it feels like you could be miles away. Rooms and suites face out over the resort's grounds and towards the Ping river which makes it feel like you are out in the country. If river views are important for you ask for a room on the top floor, but otherwise the garden views are just as lovely.

At the time that I visited the Anantara in Chiang Mai it had just enjoyed a seemingly smooth transition from its previous glory as the Chedi Chiang Mai. This property was an unexpected gem in my recent travels in Thailand. The location, right in the centre of the old town of Chiang Mai, sitting directly on the Ping River is a massive selling point. It is a great place to soak up the atmosphere of the city, best enjoyed from the Thai restaurant on the river edge watching floating lanterns, city lights and the boat life. It is an understated, yet sophisticated hotel, with a relaxed feel. The outside looks almost camouflaged, yet at night the place has a mystical glow with subtle, soft lighting and candles floating on the water. Choose from a Kasara Suite or Deluxe Room; both have balconies, but with varying views and with the Suites enjoying a more spacious setup. Given its location, it is amazingly peaceful within the confines of the hotel.

When you enter the Anantara Chiang Mai, it is like walking into an oasis of peace and calm, right in the heart of Chiang Mai. The location is great and you can walk out to the markets and local restaurants and then come back to this contemporary and chic retreat, with its lovely pool overlooking the river and tranquil spa.
