Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Any time of year is fine for a visit except from January to March, when heavy rainfall in many areas can make some roads all but impassable, and when there’s a high risk of cyclones in the east and northeast. In general, the best time to travel in most areas is April and October/November. The coolest time to travel anywhere is during the dry season (May to October).

Average maximum temperatures vary from about 30°C in coastal areas (higher in summer) to around 25°C on the hauts plateaux. In Antananarivo and other highland areas, temperatures during winter can drop to 10°C and even lower during the night.

Itinerary

An exploration to three diverse corners of the vast island of Madagascar taking in national parks, sand dunes and shimmering islands, and giving a wonderful overview of the highlights of this incredible island's wildlife and culture.

  1. Fly to Antananarivo

  2. Days 1-2: Antananarivo

Fly into Antananarivo, here you will be met and transferred to a quaint French style guest house in the suburbs of this busy city. Relax, refresh and perhaps introduce yourself to some Malagasy cuisine before your Madagascan adventure begins.

Accommodation: Le Pavillon de l’Emyrne (1 night)

  3. Days 2-4: Southern Madagascar

The following morning you will catch a private charter flight onto Isalo, here you will begin your Madagascan odyssey in one of the country’s most beautiful national parks, Parc National d’Isalo. Here you stay at the very comfortable, French-run lodge from where you have very easy access to the park and excellent local guides. Go in search of various lemur species from brown lemurs to ring tails and sifakas and marvel at the sandstone canyons and endemic Aloe. You will enjoy a full days worth of walking in this diverse park, here there is a variety of trails dependent on ability but a popular option is ‘Canyon des Singes’ where you will find a stunning rock pool called the ‘piscine naturelle’.

Accommodation: Jardin du Roy (2 nights)

  4. Days 4-7: Southern Madagascar

After a delicious breakfast you will catch a private charter flight and fly further south to Fort Dauphin, on the south coast. Here you will stay at Mandrare River, an intimate camp nestled on the banks of the river under the shade of the Tamarind trees. Here you will have great opportunities to interact with the local villagers including visits to their traditional wrestling matches and dance displays as well as hearing their songs from the camp as they fetch water from the river each morning. There are four species of lemur in the local area for you to go in search of as well as impressive sand dunes overlooking the ocean, sisal plantations and ’spiny forests’.

Accommodation: Mandrare River Camp (3 nights)

  5. Days 7-8: Antananarivo

After an early breakfast, have a short private flight to Fort Dauphin for refueling then fly back to Antananarivo. Upon arrival into Ivato Airport you will be greeted by an English speaking guide who will accompany you to your hotel in the upper town of Antananarivo. Again you can relax and reset before you head on to the beach portion of your trip.

Accommodation: Le Pavillon de l’Emyrne (1 night)

  6. Days 8-13: Nosy Be Archipelago

From Antananarivo you will fly to the far north of Madagascar and the island of Nosy Be. From here, a two hour boat ride takes you to the remote island of Nosy Mitsio where you complete your holiday with a relaxing stay at Constance Lodge Tsarabanjina. The lodge has a very relaxed atmosphere (you can go barefoot in the bar) and has several white sand beaches. Guests can take a tour on foot right around the island with the resident marine biologist at low tide and enjoy the excellent snorkelling and diving nearby.

    Accommodation: Constance Tsarabanjina (5 nights)

  7. Fly from Nosy Be
