Zermatt offers excellent conditions throughout a long season. Skiing is well under way by early December and even late November due to high altitude glacial terrain around 4000m. As the season progresses, lower runs offer great conditions too and the skiing below 2000m is appealing when it gets really cold. By April when other resorts can be knee deep in slush, Zermatt will have the best conditions in the Alps. Check out the Zermatt Unplugged music festival in April too.

Zermatt has plenty to offer guests other than skiing. The village itself is a pleasure to explore, whether on foot or in a horse-drawn carriage, with a wealth of shops, restaurants and historic buildings to enjoy. Exploring the mountain is also straightforward with mountain railways and some wonderful walks, whether on foot or on snowshoes. If you would like a really close view of the Matterhorn, a helicopter flight around it is truly breathtaking.
Zermatt is much more of a cultural centre than many other resorts. The English church is a highlight, especially at Christmas and art exhibitions, concerts, films, walking tours are plentiful. Every April, the Zermatt Unplugged music festival attracts big name acts.
There are also plenty more active possibilities including the fitness centre, indoor tennis and squash, gym, heli-skiing, ice skating, paragliding, stunning walking tours, gorge adventures, ice climbing and tobogganing
Finally, if all of this sounds exhausting, there are some top quality spas where you can be pampered to your heart’s content.

Excellent dining options at the hotel. There are three restaurants to choose from: The Schweizerhof Kitchen which serves pizza, pasta and meats cooked in front of you on the grill. La Muna which specialises in Ceviche, and Peruvian and Asian inspired food. And finally the Cheese factory which is a traditional Swiss cheese restaurant serving fondue and raclette.

Zermatt with its history, grand palace style hotels, secret winding streets and old chalets balancing on stilts is a front runner in Switzerland as a ski resort and personally one of my favourite all round places to visit. Some hotels with old family traditions and grandeur, some propped up on the hillside with a very contemporary affair and others just extremely quirky! I didnt know what to expect with the newly renovated Schweizerhof and how it would fit in with the array of hotels that are on offer here, but I can safely say it is a breath of fresh air and somewhere I left with a little buzz of excitement from visiting. Upon entering the hotel, walking past an open fireplace and straight through into the lobby makes you feel instantly at home. The lobby opens up onto the Scweizerhof Kitchen and bar there is a multitude of areas to explore, sit and enjoy a glass of wine or just take in the surroundings; the owner has been known to handpick some ornaments from flea markets all over France. One of the first things you will notice is the mesmerizing American style open fire grill and the chefs hard at work. It is a hotel you instantly feel at home with the smiling staff always there to help and the constant babble of people coming and going. With three very diverse restaurants to choose from you dont have an excuse to leave; starting at the Schweizerhof bar with its abundant number of cocktails on offer and the DJ setup in the corner, you can make your own kind of aprs ski. You then have the choice of the famous cheese factory where you can dine on all the swiss cheese-based traditions and perhaps some with a fun twist if you so fancy. Secondly the Schweizerhof kitchen at the heart of the hotel is easy going and the place to be seen and would hugely recommend their truffle macaroni if youve had a particularly busy ski day! Last but not least the exquisite Peruvian fine dining is a must for a special treat, you can end your evening in the fumoir opposite with a glass of wine from the owners own vineyard and a Cuban cigar if you so fancy. The chic rooms are contemporary with a pop of colour. You can crash in the huge cloud like beds, bathe in the huge jacuzzi baths or just people watch up on the balcony. One of the best things is the huge amount of cupboard space which is a necessity for any ski holiday. If its a special occasion then book one of the three attic rooms which have the most wonderful log burners in the sitting room and the balcony views of the famous Matterhorn.
Ski the Matterhorn before anyone else is out of bed! Take the lift on a Thursday morning with the pisteurs and have the entire mountain to yourself (and maybe a few friends).
If you are flying into Switzerland and taking the train to your chosen destination, take the hassle of struggling with all those extra bags and FlyRail them all the way to the railway station, where they can be collected at your leisure.
Billed as the highest glacier palace in the world, this ethereal attraction is well worth a visit. Mysterious sounds accompany you as you discover this glacial world, and there's even an ice slide.
