Etendeka Walking Trails

Etendeka Conservancy, Damaraland, Namibia

At a Glance

  • With no light pollution, the stars blaze above the Etendeka mountains, fall asleep as shooting stars rocket over you and the Milky Way feels so close you could almost touch.

  • Trek through the astoundingly striking Damaraland wilderness in the hazy morning light, with only oryx grazing in the distance as company as you hike towards the next camp perched on the summit above.

  • Fall into the infinite views as the mountains and valleys sweep away from you, Hill Camp perched along the side of the Etendeka Plateau has to be seen to be believed.

  • Sit around the crackling fire or "bush tv" as you sip on a glass of Amarula after feasting on homecooked Namibian fare, Africa at it's most raw and best.

Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

All year round destination, although the best time to visit Damaraland is from May to September as the temperature is tolerably cool, especially at night. The optimum game viewing times are between June and November. The land will have dried out meaning animals must again come to waterholes to drink. Summer (November to April) also known as the rainy season is best time to travel to Damaraland for bird watching as migratory birds (both intra-African and Palaearctic) flock into the park's many habitats after the summer rains.

Marvel at magnificent views of the ancient Etendeka basalt lava flows and flat top mountains and keep an eye out for desert adapted wildlife. Trek through river beds and pass indigenous plants, animal and bird species as you understand how uncompromising this environment can be. End each day under a canopy of stars as you being to understand how Namibia is one of the top destinations for stargazing.

Etendeka Walking Trails offers up two simple but comfortable camps which bring guests closer to nature and to experience the best of the Namibian night sky. These rustic camps have five sleeping platforms each which have been raised off the ground to ensure guests safety and comfort. Beds are simple with inflatable mattresses and 100% cotton linen and duvets with each room coming with a toilet and washbasin attached to the platform, as well as communal open-air bathrooms with bucket showers between the platforms. The platforms come complete with a shaded area for respite from the hot afternoons, which can also be folded away in the evenings so guests can fall asleep under the night sky.

Although some level of fitness is required for this walking trails experience, each day can be tailored to guests need and bags will be transported by a vehicle each day. You should be aware that days can be quite hot and guests should come prepared with a hat, sunscreen and a walking stick. This walk is in the wilderness and there could be animals around; although guides do not carry weapons, but are well trained to avoid conflict with animals and always carry a radio.
