Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Summer or winter, rain or shine, there's always great stuff going on in New York, so when you're planning a trip, there's no real "best" or "worst" time to go. Weather wise fall and spring are the best times in New York. From April to June and September to November, temperatures are mild and pleasant, and the light is beautiful. Summers can be hot and humid while winter snowfalls are not uncommon.

September to December is conference season in New York, and we would advise booking early for travel during this period.

The Greenwich is a welcoming retreat ideal for families and couples alike set among the classic brick buildings of New York’s desirable TriBeCa neighbourhood, and a discreet base for a wonderful selection of local galleries, restaurants and stores.

Harmoniously blending in with the red brick facades and cobblestone streets of TriBeCa, Robert de Niro’s Greenwich Hotel instantly makes you feel at home and exudes a sense of informal but elegant style. Collections of deep armchairs, Tibetan rugs, objets d’art from around the world and old books invite you to rest awhile and take time out from the sometimes frenetic pace of New York, and there is a lovely garden courtyard where you can take an alfresco breakfast or afternoon tea.

De Niro’s hand is evident, from the hand-selected Tuscan tiles, to reclaimed materials and even some of De Niro’s own artwork remind you that The Greenwich was created with love and a sense of old-time values, yet it never is anything less than stylish.

There are 88 rooms, all individually decorated, but they are all spacious by New York standards and classily low-key in décor, with oak flooring, stand-alone soaking tubs and small libraries. The beds are wonderfully comfortable, with high thread-count linens and all the technology you would imagine, including iPod docks, complimentary WiFi and flat-screen TVs. Luxurious bathrobes are provided, and the bathrooms with their Moroccan tiles and Carrara marble are delightful. Some rooms also have fireplaces.

The hotel’s trattoria, Locanda Verde, is a warm and inviting place to enjoy high-end North Italian comfort food, with traditional dishes of home made pasta, spicy Italian sausage and roasted garlic chicken, while the restaurant’s Parisian-style bar is a great place for an evening cocktail among the creative types, A-listers and hotel guests who mix.

Rare for a New York hotel, The Greenwich also has an indoor swimming pool, and there is a Japanese spa, Shibui, which is in the style of a Japanese farmhouse with lantern lighting, bamboo and cedar, and amongst the treatment rooms, where you can receive manicures, facials, shiatsu treatments and massages, there is also a large tub for Japanese bathing rituals.

88 rooms with HDTV, DVD player, preloaded iPod, book selection, electronic curtains (standard rooms are a little on the small side), including 12 suites and a penthouse fitted with Carrara marble. Greenwich Rooms and upwards have a deep tub big enough for two, as well as a rainfall shower, with big white fluffy towels and robes, and Red Flower bathroom products.

Superior Greenwich Room
Deluxe Greenwich Room

Children are welcome to come and stay at The Greenwich. All rooms can accommodate extra beds or baby cots, except Courtyard or Greenwich rooms. Corner suites can connect with Deluxe Rooms.

Spa, fitness centre, drawing room, DVD library, free WiFi throughout, valet parking, in-room check-in. The Shibui spa contains a reconstructed bamboo farmhouse that houses the heated indoor pool, lit by lanterns. A few loungers, freshly squeezed fruit juices, light spa meals and sake are always available. The restaurant Locanda Verde (head chef Andrew Carmellini) serves up high-end Italian comfort food amid warm earth tones, low lighting and a seductive ambience. Bellini martinis are a speciality at Locanda Verde’s Parisian-style bar, which packs in punters on weekend evenings.

Staying power isn't the norm in Downtown Manhattan, where a new hotel seems to pop up every other week; but Robert de Niro's Greenwich Hotel (a relative veteran at six years old) has pulled it off. That's because it gets everything right, from the TriBeCa location, where the West Side evening light bounces beguilingly off cobblestoned streets, to the Andrew Carmellini restaurant, Locanda Verde, which serves spot-on rustic Italian food (pappardelle with bolognese ragu and solo di bruna; roasted Brussels sprouts with pancetta and pecorino) and treads that tightrope between sceney and cosy like a Cirque du Soleil old-timer. The 88 bedrooms are all slightly different, with leather and velvet sofas, antique silk rugs and bathrooms lined with either Moroccan tiles or Carrara marble. Public spaces (for guests only) have a gentleman's club vibe and are hung with paintings by De Niro senior; an open fire crackles in the drawing room in winter, and there's an outside terrace for summer. The biggest boon of all is the lantern-lit Shibui Spa, which incorporates a pool and a 250-year-old Japanese bamboo farmhouse. It's the perfect place to take a break from this non-stop city and its prying eyes - as Miley Cyrus, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Aniston and every other famous guest would agree.
