There are two well-defined seasons in the Pantanal: one dry (May to September) and one rainy (December to March). Wildlife is generally better seen in the Pantanal and Amazon in the dry season, which is a more pleasant time to travel, and when bugs are minimal.
An incredible wildlife adventure, Brazilian-style, that will give you an in-depth look at Brazil's wonderfully contrasting ecosystems - the Pantanal wetlands, virgin Amazon rainforest and the Atlantic forests of Rio de Janeiro and the Emerald Coast.
Begin this superb adventure by flying to Cuiaba in the northern Pantanal to stay for four nights at Araras Eco Lodge. This simple but comfortable lodge is an excellent base for your days of wildlife-viewing. You can go out on foot, by 4x4, on horseback and by boat to explore these huge seasonally flooded wetlands. There are over 600 species of birds, many kinds of fish, and healthy populations of jaguars, tapirs, giant anteaters, caiman and much more.
Continue north into the Amazon basin to stay four nights at the incredible Cristalino Jungle Lodge. The Amazon is home to more species of plants and animals than any other terrestrial ecosystem on the planet. Cristalino Jungle Lodge unique and exciting opportunities for wildlife viewing, whether it be from a quiet boat ride on the Cristalino River, a nature walk on one of the many trails in the reserve or from atop the 50 meter observation tower. Expect to spot a range of wildlife species, from the carnivorous predators at the top of the food chain such as jaguars, harpy eagles and giant otters to the herbivores at the bottom like the capybara and agouti.
From the rainforest, fly back to Rio de Janeiro for a little down time, with the city and the beach right at your doorstep. Stay right on Copacabana Beach and a short drive from the city's key sights. Explore the colourful neighbourhoods of the city and enjoy the impressive views from the Sugar Loaf mountain and Christ the Redeemer statue. A hike up Two Brothers Hill has been included to take in incredible views over the city’s skyline, along with a city tour and time to explore the southern beaches of Rio.
Finally, head south of Rio by road (or alternatively helicopter) to enjoy the wonders of Brazil’s Emerald Coast, where miles of forested mountains give way to golden sands and sparkling green waters. Stay at the gorgeous Fasano Angra dos Reis, ideally placed to get out and explore; boat trips out to nearby islands can easily be arranged or you can hike to waterfalls hidden within the forests. This is the perfect place to unwind after the hustle and bustle of Rio before the end of your trip.
