The lodge is open from early May through to late October and is predominantly set up as a bear viewing experience. The best time to visit is during the salmon spawning season when grizzly bears are at their most active fishing in the rivers. This is usually from early September to mid to late October. The lodge books up early during this time. In June and early July, bear viewing is still good as they come out of hibernation and forage in the grasses close to the river.
Experience iconic wildlife in British Columbia, including scenic floatplane explorations, whale watching on Vancouver Island and bear viewing out in the wilderness at Great Bear Lodge.
Your adventure begins in the cosmopolitan city of Vancouver for two nights at the luxury boutique hotel, L'Hermitage Vancouver. Explore the artisan markets, unique boutiques and postcard sights in Granville Island, or for a more active day, The Grand Bicycle Tour is perfect to experience sights including the world-famous Stanley Park, the Olympic Village and Chinatown. For a taste of the city, head over to Gastown, Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhood and home to an array of eateries and a vibrant cocktail bar scene.
Taking the ferry over to the beautiful town of Victoria on Vancouver Island, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the colourful botanical gardens or venture out into the Pacific to experience the majestic migrating whales. Back on land we recommend a Victoria bicycle tour through Beacon Park, the Inner Harbour and James Bay.
After collecting your hire car, you will drive up and along the coast before heading inland through Cathedral Grove through the 800-year-old, 75 m high ancient Douglas firtrees, before arriving into Tofino. The magnificent west coast of the island is home to a rich abundance of wildlife including black bears and sea lions and during May over 20,000 migrating whales passing through the waters on their way to Mexico.
Enjoy breath-taking views on your drive across the island before transferring to a seaplane to transfer you to Great Bear Lodge. A team of specialist biologists will lead your stay over the next three days as you embark on exploring the surrounding ecosystem in search of your first sighting of a grizzly. Late August to October during the five species of local salmon make their run, which provides the prime time to spot bears, however you may also spot these grizzly locals during spring and summer, albeit in smaller numbers. The Great Bear Rainforest is also home to other wildlife and you may get chance to see grey wolves, black bears and even bald eagles.
From the lodge, you’ll fly back to the small town of Port Hardy which provides comfortable accommodation for your overnight stay before connecting back to Vancouver.
The final evening of your adventure is back in the city of Vancouver for a final opportunity to enjoy the delights of the vast dining options available.
