Description

This exciting trip combines Zimbabwe and Mozambique, with some time to unwind at the start and end of the trip, leaving you plenty of energy to enjoy your safari in Hwange. Spend three nights in a boutique hotel close to the Victoria Falls, enjoying exploring the area on foot, bartering for souvenirs at craft markets or if you're feeling more adventurous, taking to the skies in a helicopter or microlight.

Travel by road to nearby Hwange National Park, rich in wildlife including wild dog, lion, leopard, sable and roan antelope, and of course the famously large herds of elephants which are attracted to the park's many waterholes. Stay at a small tented camp in a superb spot for game-viewing, where elephants are often seen drinking from the swimming pool! If you want to get up close to the wildlife, it doesn't get much better than this. Spend your days here on game drives, night drives and walking safaris with expert guides. Zimbabwean guides are widely acknowledged across Africa to be some of the very best around, their training is so thorough, ensuring you are in the best hands to maximize your game-viewing.

Your final stop is the southern Mozambique coast, where you will have several days to relax and unwind on an unspoiled beach. Spend your time here diving and snorkeling in the crystal clear Indian Ocean, canoeing and sailing in a traditional Mozambique dhow. If you're visiting between August and October, migratory humpback whales can be seen breaching off shore.

If you are looking to get off the beaten track and explore some of Southern Africa's hidden gems, this is the trip for you.

When to go

There are two very distinct seasons at the Victoria Falls, the wet/flood season and the dry season. These seasons do not reflect the quantity of rain, rather reflect the volume of flow of the Zambezi River. From around March through to July the river surges in size as the rainfall in Angola and Zambia from months before swells the current. The falls are at their most dramatic at this time of year with huge columns of spray. The nights are cold and the days warm at this time of year. From around September to January the water levels drop, the falls are more accessible and views are clearer as the flow can drop in volume by 90%. It is worth noting that the rains come from late October through to February, this combined with high heat, 40 Celsius or more, in October and November, causes high levels of humidity.

In Hwange, from mid May through to early August the days are warm and clear but the night time temperatures can drop below freezing. September through to May is generally hot in the day and warm at night, Hwange sees rain from late November to April. The best time for game viewing is from August to early November, water is scarce, the bush has died back and game congregates around the pumped waterholes. Birdlife is prolific during the rainy season, and although the game has dispersed due to readily available surface water, this is still a great time to experience Hwange as the National Park hums with life.
