Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Utah has a climate moderated by altitude, with cool to cold winters and warm to hot summers, and plenty of sunshine year-round. Spring and Fall enjoy mild days and cool nights whilst the summer months from June to August provide warm days in the mountains and scorching days in the height of the summer but pleasant evenings. Summer is peak time for exploring the Grand Canyon and National Parks - of which Utah alone boasts five. In the desert, winter is marked by crisp days and cold evenings, with occasional light snow fall. Park City ski resorts of the Wasatch Mountains - an extension of the Rockies - boast some of the best powder on earth.

Insider's View

This is a daydreamer's American road-trip through and through - every stop is picture postcard, completely unique and full of opportunities for adventure!

This suggested itinerary is a starting point that we can tweak or transform into something bespoke to you. To start planning your vacation

Itinerary

The southwest blends beauty and adventure to offer the ultimate daydreamer's road trip. Chopper into the Grand Canyon, find adventure in Utah's wild red rock country, hike snow covered mountain peaks and live your own John Wayne moment in Monument Valley.

  1. Days 1-2: Las Vegas, Nevada, United States

Begin with a couple of nights living the high life in Las Vegas, where you can enjoy the razzle-dazzle of a Vegas show, and go from neon to nature with a spectacular helicopter flight through the mighty Grand Canyon. We’ve included a fantastic flight, with a landing on the western rim of the Grand Canyon so you can soak in this wonder of the world with your feet firmly on the ground.

Accommodation: Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas (2 nights)

  2. Days 3-5: Springdale, Zion National Park

Then it's time to pick up your faithful SUV jeep for the two-and-a-half-hour drive to majestic Zion National Park, where you can hike through narrow slot canyons, walk along river trails, or climb up for amazing views from Observation Point. We’ve included a hiking guide for half a day so you can explore the best spots in the park. Stay in charming Springdale to be close to all the adventure possibilities, but within walking distance of charming restaurants and cafes.

Accommodation: Desert Pearl Inn (2 nights)

  3. Days 5-8: Wasatch Mountains

Next, it's a five-hour drive north from red rock country to the snow-capped Wasatch Mountains, home to Sundance, Robert Redford's elegantly rustic retreat on the slopes of Mount Timpanogos. Take scenic byway US-89 to drive past sorbet-colored hoodoos and the rock spires of Bryce Canyon. At Sundance, you will find yourself at a heavenly creative hub, where you can spin a potter's wheel, join a jewelry workshop, wake to morning yoga or mountain bike along the mountain trails. Hang out at the Owl Bar, once frequented by Butch Cassidy's gang, and sip on Sundance's own home-grown chardonnay. It’s also a fantastic spot for white water rafting, so we’ve included a rafting trip on the Provo River with some fun but gentle grade I and II rapids to tackle.

Accommodation: Sundance Mountain Resort (3 nights)

  4. Days 8-10: Moab

From here, it's a four-hour scenic drive to Moab, adventure capital of the southwest, set at the heart of some truly extraordinary scenery, with vibrant red rocks, canyons, mesas and delicate rock arches. Here you can get an adrenaline rush on four wheels with ATV and Hummer tours, hike at Arches National Park (don't miss the hike to the famed Delicate Arch) and drive out to the Horseshoe Canyon with superb life-size rock art in Canyonlands National Park. During your stay at Sorrel River Ranch, idyllically set by the Colorado River, we’ve included a ride out with the wranglers aboard a American quarter-horse to explore red rock country as man has since time immemorial.

Accommodation: Sorrel River Ranch (2 nights)

  5. Days 10-11: The Southwest, United States of America

From Sorrel, it is a three-hour drive to Monument Valley, an iconic symbol of the American West and movie backdrop of Hollywood movies from John Wayne's Stage Coach to blockbuster The Lone Ranger. We’ve included a tour of the valley, where you’ll get off-road with a Navajo Indian guide to take in the iconic vistas and visit ancient Anasazi pueblos brimful with rock art and archaeology. In the evening it's fun to watch old black and white Hollywood movies and dine out on Navajo frybread and hearty stew.

Accommodation: The View Monument Valley (1 nights)

  6. Days 11-14: Lake Powell, Utah

From Monument Valley, the road winds through isolated pioneer towns, before crossing the Arizona/Utah state line to arrive three hours later at the ultimate desert hideaway, Amangiri. Located close to Lake Powell and set amid striking rock formations and isolated beauty, this hotel is the ideal place to kick back after your adventure: read a book on a plush day-bed by the natural rock pool, pack a picnic and jump aboard a private speed-boat on Lake Powell and, by night, sit under vast desert skies and count stars by the fire. Leaving Amangiri, your road trip comes to an end with the scenic four-hour drive back to the bright lights of Vegas, from where you can fly home.

    Accommodation: Amangiri (3 nights)
