Rwanda can be visited at any time of year. There are two annual rainy seasons: the big rains which last from mid-February to the beginning of June, and the small rains from mid-September to mid-December. Rainfall, especially over the mountains, is heavy during these two periods, particularly from March to May. The long dry season, June to September, is the best time for tracking gorillas in the Volcanoes National Park and for hiking in Nyungwe Forest Reserve.
Go in search of the mountain gorillas of Rwanda in the well known Volcanoes National Park, before flying onto the cultural city of Cape Town where you can indulge in delicious food and wine, visit the vibrant winelands, climb to the peak of the impressive Table Mountain or visit the resident penguins at boulders beach. One simple flight connects these two very different, but equally as popular, African Experiences.
Arrive into Kigali International Airport where your African adventure will commence. Marvel at the views of the Virunga massive volcanic range as you drive up to Volcanoes National Park, home to the endangered mountain gorillas of Rwanda. During your three night stay you will gain an insight into the vibrant culture of Rwanda and learn more about how these communities live on the boarder of the national park. A visit to Rwanda would of course not be complete without a gorilla trekking experience. Wake up early, indulge in a hearty breakfast before heading off in search of your designated gorilla family. Your trek will take you through a patchwork of agricultural farm land before entering the dense forests of Volcanoes National Park. Your guide will hack through thick foliage and push through tall fern until you are in the presence of a gorilla family feeding, playing and lounging amongst the greenery. Although the trek can be hard work, the experience is truly rewarding and a must for any wildlife enthusiast.
Drive down the winding roads from Volcanoes National Park and back to Kigali. Stop on route to visit the famous Genocide Museum to understand more about the tragic history of this country. The museum is of course sad but also incredibly informative and certainly worth the stop. Spend a night in Kigali to relax and unwind before an early morning flight the following day.
Fly to the popular city of Cape Town. During your five night stay there is a huge variety of activities to keep you busy or alternatively you can relax by the pool in the African sunshine, watching the crashing waves of the Atlantic. Walk along the bustling waterfront watching street performers and buying African souvenirs, come face to face with the resident penguins of boulders beach or venture out to the majestic winelands and sample the regions popular wines. It is key to indulge in the many exceptional restaurants the city has on offer, there are so many incredible dining experiences you will find it difficult to choose.
Table Mountain, at 1086 metres above sea level, forms the impressive backdrop to Cape Town. An impressive natural landmark with a 3km flat plateau at the summit, a cable car trip to the top is the best way to experience its breathtaking views.
Gorilla tracking in Parc National des Volcanoes, through the mountainous forest on the slopes of the Virunga range, is a magical experience. Seeing a mountain gorilla in its natural habitat is one of the world's most thrilling wildlife experiences.
The V&A waterfront in Cape Town houses over 226 shops and is an excellent place to visit for evening entertainment, shopping, cafés, and al-fresco dining.
