Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Mauritius enjoys a typically tropical climate with year-round heat, although the southeast trade winds help it never to feel too muggy. The summer months are from December to April, when it can nevertheless be extremely humid, and the winter, such as it is, runs from May to November, and is cooler and drier.

The best months to visit Mauritius are May to early December. January and February, the peak cyclone months, are best avoided by water-sports enthusiasts and divers. Cyclones rarely hit Mauritius (although Rodrigues has suffered far more regularly than the mainland) but cyclones way out at sea can bring days of squally rain.

Coastal temperatures range between 25°C and 33°C in summer and between 18°C and 24°C in winter. On the plateau it will be some 5°C cooler. The highlands are also the wettest part of the island – it can rain here at any time of year, and even when it’s not raining the area can be cloaked in low-lying cloud. When the winds are at their strongest in July and August it can be blustery on the east coast, though the breeze brings welcome relief in summer.

Apart from the Christmas-New Year peak, Mauritius doesn’t really have high and low seasons. The situation is more dependent on outside factors (such as the French school holidays, which cause a big increase in demand and prices in August).

Itinerary

This tailor-made honeymoon to Mauritius takes in two eco-friendly boutique hotels showcasing the lush mountains of Chamarel, and the sandy beaches at Palmar.

  1. Fly to Mauritius

  2. Days 1-6: Mauritius

Upon arrival at Mauritius you will head to the beautifully rustic Lakaz Chamarel. As you travel down uneven jungle roads the trees and foliage then clear to reveal a beautiful glade with the manor house of the hotel as the focal point, and the rooms and suites hidden amongst the forested hillside.

For those who want peace and serenity they have private pools with each of their suites, small shared pools with the rooms, and a “Silent Place” that is an ideal spot to enjoy some Yoga and Pilates, or simply to just reflect quietly. But for the adrenaline junkies, the nearby Black River gorge offers about 60km of trails which can be enjoyed by foot or bike and are suitable for all levels of fitness.

Nearby, you can visit the famed seven coloured sands of Chamarel, a small formation of sand dunes with striking colours of red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple and yellow. Another perfect way to while away a few hours is to pay a visit to the Rhumerie de Chamarel, a small agricole rhumerile located just a moment away from Lakaz Chamarel. Your tour starts from where the cane comes into the factory, and of course, finishes with a tasting of their rum. If you are not a fan of the neat stuff, then ask them to prepare you a traditional Mauritian Rum Punch, made simply with a little sugar, and a twist of lemon.

    Accommodation: Lakaz Chamarel (5 nights)

  3. Days 6-11: Mauritius

After your time at Lakaz Chamarel, you will head east to SALT of Palmar, a unique designer-led eco-friendly boutique hotel located on the beach on the east coast of Mauritius. With a stunning location the hotel offers an immersive, relaxing and rejuvenating break, ideal for eco and health conscious guests.
