Journey through Botswana on this action-packed safari, exploring the Okavango Delta, Selinda Concession and Makgadikgadi pans. As well as traditional game-drives, your safari takes the form of walking safaris with expert guides, canoeing the Selinda spillway when water levels permit, and horse riding in the Makgadikgadi pans. Ideal for the more active traveler looking to a safari with a difference.

Begin with three nights of luxury at the architecturally stunning Sandibe Safari Lodge, in the heart of the Delta. Search for prides of lion, herds of zebra and leopards lounging in the trees with expert guides, on game-drives and guided walks. Stop and admire the sunset with a cold gin and tonic in hand, listening to the sounds of the bush all around you.

From here fly north to the Selinda concession, where you'll set off on the Selinda Adventure Trail, combining walking and canoeing (when water levels permit) through the reserve, and sleeping in simple dome tents each night. This is a true adventure, and although there are few luxuries in the accommodation, the experience of being out and experiencing nature and the wilderness with nothing but your own two feet or a canoe and paddle to get you there is unforgettable. An expert crew sets up camp each day for you and cooks a delicious meal over an open fire, so you'll certainly be looked after!

Fly south to the vast moonscape of the Makgadikgadi pans for the next stage of your safari, staying at the iconic Jack's Camp and enjoying three days of horse-riding adventures. The landscape here couldn't be more different to the earlier parts of your safari, and the wildlife is too. Spend time with a meerkat colony (who may climb on your head to use you as a vantage point), ride to the vast upside-down-shaped Chapman's baobab tree, visited by early explorers including Livingstone, and learn about the hunter gatherer Zu'hoasi people, a relation of the San bushmen.

Your journey concludes in Zimbabwe at the spectacular Victoria Falls, staying at the luxurious Matetsi River Lodge. Enjoy aerial views of the Falls from helicopter, or enjoy a relaxing sunset boat safari along the shores of the Zambezi River looking for birdlife and getting up close to the hippos.

From Botswana's main hub, Maun, fly by light aircraft into the Okavango Delta for the start of your safari at Sandibe Safari Lodge. From here, fly by light aircraft to the Selinda Concession for your canoeing and walking safari, before flying south to the Makgadikgadi pans. Once your adventures in Botswana have concluded, you'll fly to Johannesburg and spend a night in a luxury hotel before flying up to the Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwe side for the final stage of your journey.

When to go

Botswana’s dry season runs from May to September, and the Okavango Delta is in flood between June and October, providing prime game-viewing as wildlife is generally restricted to islands and land by the heightened water. The weather during these months is hot during the day, but it isn't a stifling heat, and cold at night. The summer months (Nov - Mar) can be hot and humid and there is a chance of rain. Botswana has one rainy season which runs between mid-December and runs through to mid-March.

There are two very distinct seasons at the Victoria Falls, the wet/flood season and the dry season. These seasons do not reflect the quantity of rain, rather reflect the volume of flow of the Zambezi River. From around March through to July the river surges in size as the rainfall in Angola and Zambia from months before swells the current. The falls are at their most dramatic at this time of year with huge columns of spray. The nights are cold and the days warm at this time of year. From around September to January the water levels drop, the falls are more accessible and views are clearer as the flow can drop in volume by 90%. It is worth noting that the rains come from late October through to February, this combined with high heat, 40 celsius or more, in October and November, causes high levels of humidity.
