The subtropical climate in Kwazulu Natal, means anytime of the year is worth a visit. The wildflower season is generally from mid August to mid September. The whale watching season runs from June to November.
A wonderful combination for couples and families alike, first visit the exclusive big five Thanda Game Reserve, before heading to the shores of the Indian Ocean to enjoy spectacular scuba diving, snorkelling, and beautiful scenery.
After flying overnight to Johannesburg, connect onwards to Durban. You will be met and transferred to Phinda Game Reserve, your home for the next four nights.
Explore this vast and pristine reserve on a morning game drive to find the Big Five or choose to head out on foot with your guide - a great way to see the smaller highlights of the bush. As Phinda is a private game reserve, you will see only your fellow guests as you explore. Game drives are all in open topped vehicles, giving you a perfect panorama of the wildlife.
For those wishing to immerse themselves further in Phinda's incredible wildlife, there is the option to join in with the conservation team as they work in the reserve - it's a fascinating day and gives a real insight into the very important work the team do to preserve the reserve's game.
Moving on from Phinda, you'll head to Thonga Beach Lodge, situated on the shores of the Indian Ocean. This super lodge nestles in the coastal dune forest, with all its chalets enjoying wonderful views of the ocean. Here you can enjoy superb snorkelling just a stroll away from the lodge; the clear warm waters of the Indian Ocean play host to over 1,250 species of fish. The scuba diving is wonderful, with the lodge launching its boat straight from the beach and instructors on hand to teach beginners.
The lodge offers an Ocean Safari, taking guests out in their own boat to see shoals of game fish, schools of bottlenose dolphins and, during the summer, whale sharks and turtles. In the winter, humpback whales are often spotted. Speak to your specialist consultant for more details.
