Skiing in August? Enjoy making your friends green with envy
The ski season in Chile runs from late June through to the end of September, with peak prices in July and early August. The best time to combine skiing in Chile with Mexico's Caribbean coast is July or August to get the best of the powder and the best of the Caribbean weather before the wettest months of September or October.
The Chilean Andes are a superb winter playground and offer some of the best skiing conditions on earth. Combine this with some down time on the Caribbean coast of Mexico and you have a recipe for the ultimate summer holiday, linked with easy direct flight routes.
Begin by flying into Santiago and heading straight into the Andes to stay at Valle Nevado. Here, among the majesty of the high Andes, is the largest Valle skiable terrain in the Americas. The resort was designed with the expertise of the French and there is an excellent lift system providing access to pistes for all abilities. There is also a great deal of off-piste action possible and, for added excitement, there is an excellent heli-skiing programme allowing you to discover glaciers and spectacular descents in the company of expert guides.
Return to Santiago and fly direct to Cancun on Mexico's Riviera Maya where you will be able to indulge in some serious relaxation and pampering. A short 10-minute drive from the airport will bring you to Nizuc Resort & Spa, an ultra-luxurious property with fantastic facilities and one of the most beautiful stretches of sand. Make the most of doing nothing at all, whilst in between, dining at the many on-site restaurants and tucking into fresh ceviche accompanied by a sweet tamarind margarita. For those who feel inclined to get out and explore, the Rivera Maya is rich with Mayan ruins, fantastic diving spots and cenotes for snorkelling. Travel in July and August also coincides with whale shark season so please speak to a specialist if you would like to arrange a snorkelling trip.
Rise early to explore the impressive site of Chichen Itza as the sun comes up and before the gates open to the public on this exclusive private experience, allowing you to escape the crowds and make the most of your time at this must-see landmark.
Experience the most amazing scuba diving of your life exploring the world's most extensive system of underwater caverns and caves at Dos Ojos cenote near Tulum. All you need is an open water certificate for this epic adventure.
Snorkelling with whale sharks is incredible, best experienced between July and August when droves of these remarkable creatures can be found. Gasp as these gentle leviathans of the deep cruise past you, an utterly unforgettable experience.
Experience the mystery and the magic of Tulum, considered some of the most beautiful Mayan ruins in Mexico mostly because of its dramatic location on a cliff overlooking the turquoise Caribbean.
