Average time to visit

It is very difficult to predict the weather in the United Kingdom - in the summer from May to late September is generally seen as the most pleasant time to visit. Rainfall is difficult to predict - but the UK does not receive as much as many are led to believe! In the winters, temperatures do fall, but there is nothing better than finding a remote pub with a roaring fire to sit beside after a long walk in the country.

Itinerary

This memorable once-in-a-lifetime adventure is the ultimate was to explore the Scottish Highlands in luxury style. The Belmond Royal Scotsman offers simply outstanding personal service, fine dining, sumptuous comfort and the companionable atmosphere of a country house hotel as you glide past glens, castles and heather-clad mountains in the Highlands and explore the remote sea lochs, marine wildlife and island communities off Scotland’s West Coast.

  1. Days 1-3: Edinburgh

Arriving in Edinburgh, you’ll have some time to settle in and explore a little from your hotel. Edinburgh is a small and enchanting city which is easily explored on foot. Not to be missed is Edinburgh castle, a building teeming in history dating all the way back to the Iron age where you’ll find Scotland’s crown jewels. We can arrange a private guide to take you on a walking tour through the medieval old town, past wonderful neoclassical buildings and up to Carlton Hill where you’ll enjoy fabulous views of the city. The new town features contrasting Georgian architecture and you’ll discover that Edinburgh is a melting pot of different inhabitants including many students who attend the acclaimed University here.

Accommodation: The Balmoral, a Rocco Forte Hotel (2 nights)

  2. Days 3-6: Edinburgh & the Lowlands

After an action-packed few days exploring Edinburgh you will be welcomed aboard the Belmond Royal Scotsman by a piper at Edinburgh’s Waverley Station, ready to embark on an unforgettable journey. There are a range of journey options available aboard the train from  two, three or four-night journeys, and our expert travel consultants will guide for through the different options so we can make the right choice for you.

Life on board the Belmond Royal Scotsman is relaxed and indulgent, and in between enjoying outstanding dining and fine wines, chatting with fellow guests in the ample Observation Car and sinking into a heavenly bed in your private en-suite cabin, you and your fellow privileged guests will disembark along the way to experience the very best of the Highlands. This might include (depending on which tour you are doing) a Highland wildlife adventure, visiting a ruined castle or a whisky distillery, clay pigeon shooting on a Scottish laird's estate, learning a Scottish reel at a private ceilidh or hiking through the Caledonian pine forest.

Accommodation: Belmond Royal Scotsman (3 nights)

  3. Days 6-8: Perthshire

To round off your luxurious, Scottish adventure we’ve included 2 nights at the iconic Gleneagles hotel, which, as well as being well-known for its revered golf course, is also a stunning hotel in a beautiful location with plenty of activities. Throw yourself into a truly Scottish outdoor lifestyle as you sample fishing, cycling, riding or even try your hand at falconry. Of course, should you wish to spend your time indoors you can choose to pamper yourself in the exquisite spa and sample local fare in Scotland’s only 2-michelin starred restaurant.

    Accommodation: Gleneagles (2 nights)
