Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

April to October is best for time for visiting Peru’s Andean region and main highlights. It is typically sunny in the day and cold at night due to altitude. Heavy rains last from December to end of February with January and February being the wettest months. The Amazon is generally hot, wet and humid year round. Peru is very popular in the high season, especially during their many cultural festivals such as Inti Raymi on 24 June, so best to book well in advance. Whales can be seen off the coast of Mancora from mid-July to the end of October.

  1. Fly to Lima

  2. Days 1-2: Lima

Begin by flying to Lima where we have suggested an overnight stay at the excellent Belmond Miraflores Park Hotel, the perfect place to get your head down after a long flight, with comfortable family-friendly accommodation and plenty of fantastic facilities to include a swimming pool.

Accommodation: Belmond Miraflores Park (1 night)

  3. Days 2-5: Puerto Maldonado

Next stop is the mighty Amazon Rainforest. A short flight brings you to Puerto Maldonado where you will be transferred by road and boat along the Madre de Dios river to the brilliant Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica, one of Peru’s top wildlife lodges. Accompanied by expert guides you will head into the jungle on foot or by boat to get up close to an incredible diversity of wildlife. Spot scarlet macaws as they surround clay licks and watch as a variety of monkeys swing through the trees, keeping your eyes peeled for sloths, toucans and many other weird and wonderful creatures, as well as enjoying the opportunity to interact with indigenous communities. Three nights here will provide plenty of adventure and an unforgettable experience.

Accommodation: Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica (3 nights)

  4. Days 5-8: Sacred Valley

Fly to Cuzco and continue by road into the Sacred Valley of the Incas to stay for three nights at the family-friendly Sol y Luna, just outside Urubamba. Here a multitude of adventurous activities go hand in hand with incredible scenery, cultural sites, Andean villages and colourful markets. Go as hard as you like, enjoying a kayaking or white-water rafting adventure, and if you wish to add on more adventures, add on some, trekking horse riding or even an adrenaline fuelled bike ride. Alternatively, relax with great food in the stunning natural surroundings and simply enjoy the spectacular setting.

Accommodation: Hotel Sol y Luna (3 nights)

  5. Days 8-9: Machu Picchu

Continue the adventure with a one-day private hike to the extraordinary ancient Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, which is simply stunning in the early morning mist. The KM104 trek takes on part of the classic Inca Trail but eliminates the need to camp so is perfect for families shorter on time. Stay at the charming Inkaterra Machu Picchu, set in the cloudforest that abounds in hummingbirds and wild orchids. There is even a spectacled bear project, and you may see one of the rehabilitated Paddington Bears while you are there. Enjoy a guided tour of this impressive historic site before returning to Cuzco by train the following day.

Accommodation: Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel (1 night)

  6. Days 9-11: Cuzco

Cuzco is a beautiful colonial city and was once the heart of the Inca empire. There are excellent museums, a great handicrafts market and good restaurants to enjoy, many of which are all within walking distance of the Plaza de Armas and the colonial centre. Stay for two nights and enjoy a guided city tour, as well as free time to explore at your own pace.

Accommodation: Belmond Hotel Monasterio (2 nights)

  7. Days 11-14: Mancora

To finish, fly up to Tumbes via Lima for some final relaxation on one of Peru's northern beaches, near the chilled-out surf town of Mancora. Enjoy kitesurfing, whale watching or horse rides along the sand, basing yourself at the stylish and family-friendly Arennas Mancora. Fly back to Lima after your final three nights here and connect with your flight back home.

    Accommodation: Arennas Mancora (3 nights)

  8. Fly home from Lima
