Description

Costa Rica is a dream destination for an adventurous honeymoon, with a palm-fringed coastline, wildlife in abundance and exclusive accommodation to indulge in after days of exploring the jungle or ocean. Volcanic landscapes provide an idyllic canvas for thrill-seeking activities whilst the valleys offer a patchwork of coffee plantations for a pleasant and refreshing mountain retreat.

Arrive into San Jose and head straight for Xandari Plantation,a characterful boutique hotel overlooking the beautiful Central Valley and surrounded by miles of nature trails and coffee plantations. Relax by the pool or in the spa or perhaps enjoy a coffee tour before the real adventure begins.

From Xandari, you will be transferred back to San Jose to meet your rafting guide who will escort you downriver to the beautiful Pacuare Lodge. This raft-in, raft-out lodge is the perfect option for adventurous couples; found deep within the jungle the only way to access the lodge is along a beautiful stretch of class 3-4 white water rapids making for a totally unique experience. Palm-thatched casitas await, blending harmoniously with the surroundings and encouraging a back to nature experience.

After rafting out of Pacuare Lodge you will head north by land to the iconic Arenal Volcano. At night, when the weather is clear, you may be able to witness its fiery red eruptions. Arenal is also a great base for all kinds of adventure activities, from canopy walkways and zip-wiring to horse riding and white water rafting. Stay at the pampering Nayara Springs with its majestic views of the volcano and stunning villas with their very own private plunge pools to unwind after your adrenaline-fuelled week.

The next stop brings you to the wonderful Kura Design Villas, a hideaway with breathtaking high-design villas nestled into the hillside with sweeping views over the jungle to the Pacific Ocean. Kura is the perfect place to indulge your senses; if you’re not relaxing in a hammock, taking a dip in the infinity pool or relaxing at the spa, the nearby off-the-beaten track beaches are great to explore a short drive away, as well as surrounding trails in the rainforest. In season guests can also see whales migrating up the coast.

End your honeymoon on a high at the beautiful Latitude 10 on the northern coast of the Nicoya Peninsula, boasting 100 meters of private beach where you can indulge in some yoga or enjoy world-class surfing. There are just 5 individual casitas here which ensures an intimate and private stay, with highly personalized service ensuring you leave feeling totally relaxed.

When to go

Year round destination, although November to April are the best months for sunshine. The ‘Green’ season, from May to October, is a good time to visit: it’s sunny in the mornings with rain in the afternoons. The quietest period is April to early June. The rain can be particularly strong in September and October.

Rafting is possible all year round, though the river might be slightly colder during the green season.
