Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

The main tourist season is in January and February, when the weather is hottest and driest. At this time, the animals in the wildlife parks tend to congregate more around the watercourses, making them easier to spot.

Northern and eastern Kenya temperatures vary from highs of up to 40°C during the day to less than 20°C at night. Rainfall in this area is sparse and, when it does occur, is often in the form of violent storms. July is usually the driest month, and November the wettest.

Itinerary

A superb itinerary covering two of Kenya's highlights, the expansive Samburu, home to the Samburu Five, and the Maasai Mara, where you can witness one of the most incredible wildlife spectacles in the world - the Great Migration.

  1. Fly to Samburu (via Nairobi)

  2. Days 1-4: Samburu National Reserve

Your Kenyan adventure starts in the exceptionally beautiful and diverse Samburu, bordered to the south by Ewaso Nyiro River and home to an abundance of animals. Here you will spend the next three nights at Sasaab. This Moroccan-styled property offers incredible views across the Laikipia Plateau and towards Mount Kenya. Enjoy days exploring and finding some of the rich and natural animal diversity from elephant to lion to the Samburu Five; the Besia oryx, reticulated giraffe, Grevy's Zebra, Gerenuk antelope and Somali ostrich. Alternatively explore the northern frontier by camel as Samburu guides lead you across the stunning landscapes.

    Accommodation: Sasaab (3 nights)

  3. Days 4-8: Maasai Mara

After exploring Samburu take a light aircraft (sensational views) down to the majestic Maasai Mara, to stay at Solio's sister-camp, Sala's. Perfectly positioned right in the south of the Mara, this little camp is intimate and remote, and affords some of the very best game viewing that can be had in the Mara. The camp is in the perfect position to view the migration, with opportunities to watch the wildebeest and zebra as they make their swift and precarious crossing of the river - excitement guaranteed. Both camps offer superb accommodation and very high levels of service - a combination of the two is the perfect way to see two of Kenya's highlights.

    Accommodation: Sala's Camp (4 nights)

  4. Days 8-9: Nairobi and Central Kenya

Your final night in Kenya is spent with some very tall friends - a night at Giraffe Manor in the Langata area of Nairobi will give you a chance to get up close and personal with these beautiful friendly animals - and with a pot of giraffe nuts in every bedroom, and the giraffes popping their heads in to say hello at breakfast, photographic opportunities are everywhere.

    Accommodation: Giraffe Manor (1 night)

  5. Fly home from Nairobi

Experiences

  • Game drives in the Maasai Mara

Exploring this iconic ecosystem in an adapted, open 4x4 safari vehicle with your professional safari guide is one of the best ways to get up close to the huge volume and wide diversity of wildlife in the Mara.

  • Giraffe Center - African Fund for Endangered Wildlife

If you have the time whilst in Nairobi, a visit to the Giraffe Center is a must. Located in the leafy suburb of Karen, the center is an educational and interactive experience. A unique opportunity to witness giraffe from very close quarters.

  • The Great Migration

The Maasai Mara is famous for being home to one of nature’s most spectacular events: the Great Migration. Millions of wildebeest cross from Tanzania’s Serengeti to Kenya’s Mara in search of better grazing.
