Your Zambian sojourn starts at the renowned Nkwali Camp - run by Robin Pope Safaris, one of Zambia's foremost operators, Nkwali occupies a prime position on a sweeping bend of the Luangwa River, overlooking the South Luangwa National Park, where the walking safari was born. While at Nkwali you will have the chance to explore the park in the company of your expert guide, in open 4X4 game viewing vehicles, on day and night game drives. After sundowners, your guide will bring out a spotlight and you will go in search of the nocturnal animals. South Luangwa is famous for its population of leopard and lion, and these are often to be found heading out to hunt or draped attractively in the branches of a tree!

Meals at Nkwali are a friendly affair, with everyone eating together; the dinner-table talk often turns to what has been seen that day!

After Nkwali you will be transferred to one of Robin Pope Safaris lodges in the Nsefu Sector of the park - this is a fascinating area, designated as part of the park relatively recently, due to its hot springs and the abundance of wildlife found here. It is the only part of South Luangwa which is not bounded by the Luangwa River and here your focus will be on walking safaris and night drives. Both Tena Tena and Nsefu are beautifully appointed lodges; Nsefu is on the banks of the Luangwa and Tena Tena is further south and is a more rustic style, with tented rooms all overlooking the river. The game in both areas is prolific, with elephant and hippo often visiting the camps at night, and sometimes during the day!

After an exciting safari, what better way to wind down than by spending some time at the beach? Pumulani is Robin Pope Safaris flagship beach lodge; situated on the shores of Lake Malawi, the lodge has been designed to be very eco-friendly, and to offer the highest levels of unobtrusive service and comfort. The rooms are enormous, airy and light, and each has a beautiful view over the lake, being set a little further up the slopes. Choose to be as active or as relaxed as you wish - activities available at the lodge include waterskiing and wakeboarding, sailing, fishing, scuba diving and snorkeling. Or if you wish to stay on land, there are walks to visit local villages, and lovely birdwatching in the area. The lodge also has its very own dhow and runs sunset dhow cruises - a real highlight!

When to go

Zambia and Malawi share a moderate to sub-tropical climate with three distinct seasons: from November to March is the Emerald, or the rainy season, April to July is wintertime, when the weather is cool and dry, and August to October is summer, when the weather is hot and dry. In terms of game-viewing, the drier months, meaning a higher concentration of game at the permanent water sources, are a superb time to visit, and the beach is stunning at this time with lovely sunny weather and soft breezes coming in from Lake Malawi.
