Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Sri Lanka is a year round destination. Because the Hill Country it so high up it rarely gets unbearably hot. The months of December to April are probably the best time to visit, as temperatures rise to around 28C during the day but cool down at night. During the monsoon season from October to December you can expect heavy downpours. June to September are the driest months here, when there’s almost no rain at all. The Maldives follow a similar pattern to Sri Lanka. The dry northeast monsoon which runs from December to March, and the wet southwestern monsoon from May to November, with more strong winds and rain. April is a transitional period noted for clear water and heat. The temperature remains remarkably consistent at around 30°C. Storms are more likely from May to November.

Itinerary

Sri Lanka and the Maldives make for the ideal combination, giving visitors the chance to enjoy wildlife, culture and activity followed by a relaxing stay on the beach. This is an itinerary that works year round.

  1. Days 1-2: Wilpattu National Park

Wildlife is first on the agenda. Head up to Wilpattu National Park (best visited during the summer months, but it does work year-round). The naturalists here are some of the best in Sri Lanka for spotting deer, sloth bears, elephants and most excitingly, the elusive leopard. We have included an evening and morning safari for here so that you have the best chance for a brilliant wildlife experience with lots of sightings.

Accommodation: Leopard Trails - Wilpattu National Park (1 night)

  2. Days 2-3: Colombo

Arriving in Sri Lanka following an international flight, we have included one night to rest and relax in a lovely boutique property just a short distance from the airport before you fully start your adventure.

    Accommodation: The Wallawwa (1 night)

  3. Days 3-6: Ancient Cities

From here you’ll venture into the center of Sri Lanka to the Cultural Triangle. There are so many historic, natural and architectural highlights to enjoy here and we have included a cycle ride through the ancient ruins of UNESCO Anuradhapura with an expert guide and an early morning climb of the stunning Sigiriya rock. The rock fortress on its own is impressive but upon reaching the top you’ll be treated to some spectacular views over the surrounding lush countryside.

    Accommodation: Ulagalla (3 nights)

  4. Days 6-8: Nuwara Eliya

After three nights here, it is then off to Sri Lanka's hill country, which has absolutely beautiful views and the tea plantations are perfect for enjoying walks and bicycle rides over the next two nights. Most accommodation in the region has an interesting history, making you feel as if you have stepped back in time.

    Accommodation: Mas Villa (2 nights)

  5. Days 8-15: Maldives

From the rolling green hills of Sri Lanka, take a short flight of about an hour and a half to the sparkling atolls of the Maldives, where you will be spending the next seven nights. The South Malé Atoll has some exceptionally beautiful beaches and the turquoise waters beautifully clear. The Maldives is one of the best places in the world for diving, so don't miss the chance to encounter whale sharks and manta rays.

Accommodation: OZEN by Atmosphere at Maadhoo (7 nights)
