Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

The climate in New Zealand is incredibly pleasant, with warm and balmy summers and cold crisp winter months with wonderful clear, blue skies. The warmer high-season months of November to April are perfect for outdoor exploration. The colder months of June to August are the best time to ski.

Both North and South Islands are drier on the east coast, rather than on the west, where mountain ranges act as a trap for the moisture-rich winds from the Tasman Sea. It is also worth remembering that it is usually a few degrees cooler on the South Island than the North Island and as New Zealand has a maritime climate, the weather can change rapidly.

Itinerary

For those who love the great outdoors, there’s nowhere quite like New Zealand. Skip between steaming geysers and ancient forests and dine on the beach in the afternoon. This itinerary really packs a punch, with views to stun along the way.

  1. Days 1-3: Auckland

Begin your adventure in the harborside city of Auckland. Nestled between the Hauraki Gulf and Mount Eden, Auckland is a city that offers scenery, culture and a wide range of experiences. Climb to the top of the Sky Tower for far-reaching views across the city and gulf or take to the harborside parade and enjoy watching Kiwi life go by from one of the many cafes. During your time in Auckland you will visit the nearby island of Waiheke on a guided gourmet food and wine tour. Famed for being an Auckland respite, this sunny island produces a wide range of wines and olive oils, some of which you will get to sample on this epicurean tour – wine, food and picturesque scenery – this tour sets the scene for the rest of your Kiwi vacation.

Accommodation: Sofitel Auckland Viaduct Harbour (2 nights)

  2. Days 3-5: Rotorua

After collecting your hire car, commence the scenic drive through the rolling hills and farmlands of the Waikato region towards the geothermal wonderland of Rotorua. Famed for its bubbling geysers, boiling mud pools and moon-scape landscape, Rotorua showcases some of the diverse scenery New Zealand is famed for.  Spend your time in Rotorua exploring this geothermal wonderland as part of a guided tour at Te Puia or take a soak in the natural Polynesian Spa overlooking Lake Rotorua to see the medicinal effects of the environment for yourself. For those that like being active the redwood forests that surround Rotorua offer adrenalin-pumping mountain biking tracks or peaceful cruises along beautiful Lake Rotorua can be arranged for those that prefer more leisurely activities.

    Accommodation: Wildwood Lodge (2 nights)

  3. Days 5-7: Hawkes Bay

Driving East, your next destination is the Hawkes Bay region of North Island, an area famed for its epicurean delights and one that produces some of the best wine New Zealand has to offer.  Your base in Hawkes Bay is Napier, an art-deco town one destroyed by a neighboring volcano and re-built in the style of the 1920’s. Enjoy a guided art-deco tour of this unusual town or opt to hop on the Hawkes Bay Express – a traditional tram that offers guided tours of the town. We’ve included a guided Maori tour where you will get to meet local Maori Elders and learn about their spiritual culture very much alive today.

    Accommodation: Greenhill Lodge (2 nights)

  4. Days 7-9: Queenstown

After exploring the varied delights of Wellington, it’s time to fly to the South Island where your home for the next few days is the South Island best-known town – Queenstown. A year-round destination, Queenstown is often regarded as the most picturesque town in New Zealand. Overlooking Lake Wakatipu in the shadows of the neighboring Remarkables Mountain Range, Queenstown not only appeals during the summer months of December to March but is a snow-sports hotspot during the Kiwi winter.  Whether you’re a Lord of the Rings fan looking to follow in the footsteps of Frodo, a wine connoisseur or an adrenalin junky, Queenstown has something for you. On your first day in Queenstown we’ve arranged a guided orientation tour where you and your guide will customize a day to suit your interests. Learn about the area and the must-do activities before exploring and enjoying them for yourself at your leisure.

    Accommodation: Matakauri Lodge (2 nights)
