Description

An ideal first time trip to Brazil and even South America, this itinerary perfectly balances the buzz of city life, incredible landscapes, diverse culture and unspoiled beaches. You'll be staying in stylish, luxury hotels and lodges, all ideally located for exploring the destination and offering a beautiful place to unwind at the end of the day.

Start your journey with three nights in Rio de Janeiro, sightseeing, spending your days soaking up the sun, enjoying the warm hospitality and dining on delicious traditional cuisine. Enjoy the dizzy heights of the Sugar Loaf mountain, rising above the bay or stand at the feet of the Christ the Redeemer statue which overlooks the city. Perhaps you'll want to try your hand at a local cookery class or explore by bicycle. Or for a real treat, take to the skies in a helicopter to enjoy a totally different perspective. We have a wealth of ideas about how to get the most out of your time here, really getting under the skin of this iconic city, meeting the locals and seeing a side of Rio that the average tourist misses out on.

From here, head inland to the spectacular Iguazu Falls on the border with Argentina. These powerful waterfalls are up there with the Victoria Falls in Africa and Niagara in North America, and the views from the Brazilian side are second to none. You'll be staying in the beautiful Belmond Hotel das Cataratas, a two minute stroll from the falls and the only property inside the national park. Locations don't get better than this!

Last but by no means least, fly to the beach to a true gem, Ponta das Ganchos on the Santa Catarina coastline near Florianopolis. Tucked away on a peninsula, you can unwind in style away from the crowds, soaking up the sun and indulging in the freshest seafood. Enjoy a romantic dinner on the small island opposite linked by a candlelit walkway, or cruise the waters in search of migratory whales if you're here between July and October. This paradise hideaway has gorgeous gardens, a tranquil spa and many of the rooms have private plunge pools, offering the ideal atmosphere for total relaxation and indulgence. If you'd rather be more active, there is plenty on offer here, including canoeing, sailing, snorkeling and horse-back riding.

An ideal trip for couples or honeymooners wanting to take in the highlights of Brazil the Scott Dunn way, uncovering hidden gems and really getting underneath the skin of this incredible country.

Location & Directions

Rio de Janeiro, Iguazu Falls & Florianopolis

Begin in Rio de Janeiro, taking in the sights of this iconic city, before heading inland to the dramatic Iguazu Falls at the border with Argentina. After these adventures, fly out to the coast for some rest and relaxation at the beautiful Ponta dos Ganchos resort.

When to go

High season is generally December to April when it's warm and humid. The spring time - September - October - is a lovely time of year before the humidity is too much. The highest rainfall at the Iguazu Falls is between May and July, where the falls will be at their fiercest, but they are spectacular year-round. On the coast, temperatures rarely exceed 30°C and generally do not fall below 13°C (nighttimes in July). Even in winter (June-September), when rates are lower, daytime temperatures usually reach 21°C. Rainfall is a possibility throughout the year, but January and February often experience slightly heavier showers.
