Your journey starts at the lushest part of Namibia, the Caprivi Strip. This fascinating part of Namibia is like an arm reaching out to touch the Zambezi River. The strip is criss-crossed by fast flowing rivers - the Chobe which flows onwards towards the Chobe Game Reserve, the Okavango, the Linyanti, which meets the Kwando River in Botswana, and the Zambezi itself.

The feel of the Caprivi strip is, unlike most other areas of Namibia, lush and green - it almost feels like Botswana rather than Namibia. The Bwabwata National Park, where you will take game drives, forms a large area of the Caprivi. It's a pristine park, relatively undeveloped, and has some good game including elephant, kudu, impala and the rare roan and sable. Herds of eland can often be spotted, and the birding is excellent, particularly from the boat trips that the lodge arranges. Here you will stay at Susuwe, which is a super little lodge situated on an island in the river, in the midst of lush riverine forest.

Here you will be able to take game drives into the Bwabwata National Park and boat trips on the Kwando River. Fishing is a highlight here, as are the birdwatching trips by boat - you can expect to see a good variety of birds from the water including rare birds such as the slaty egret.

Moving on from Susuwe, you'll fly into the heart of the Savute, where you will stay at Savute under Canvas, a wonderful mobile camp offering an authentic experience in a very game-rich area. There are just five tents with twin or double beds and en-suite bathrooms with bucket showers. The activities here focus on morning or afternoon game drives with your expert guide to explore the area - the guiding here is renowned with excellent sightings such as wild dog, lion and leopard. The elephant population in the area is considerable, with large herds moving through the marshes in the dry season.

After a day's activities, return to camp to enjoy drinks round the camp fire before a hearty and delicious supper - and then drift away in your comfortable tent to the sounds of the African night.

When to go

Summer is the best time to visit the Caprivi Strip for bird watching, but visitors should be forewarned that the heat and humidity can be unbearable unless they are at least partially alleviated by rain. Winter (April to October) are the best time to travel for game viewing as it is much cooler and drier, with virtually no rain falling at this time. The same runs true for Botswana, with optimum months to visit the Savuti from April through to the end of October, bringing superb wildlife viewing and some great birding.
