Description

Spend your first night of this Zimbabwean adventure at Ilala Lodge in the heart of Victoria Falls Town. From the hotel it is just a short walk to the entrance to the Victoria Falls and from the many shops and activities that are on offer in the bustling colonial town.

Drive to Hwange National Park and then take a game drive through the park to Little Makalolo. Hwange is renowned for its vast herds of elephant, most of whom are very used to humans so whether you are out on a drive or in a hide opposite Little Makalolo watching the elephant come into drink you will have some fantastic viewing and photographic opportunities. Little Makalolo works very well for families as it has a spacious two bedroom family tent, so everyone can be under one roof. There is also a small pool to cool off and relax by in the heat of the day.

Kanga Bush Camp is set back from the Zambezi River and combines great seclusion with luxury, and a hint of the raw experience of camping under canvas in the heart of a wilderness area. The camp is set round a watering hole so as the dry season continues the banks become a hive of activity - to the extent the afternoon game activity is often to relax on the deck and watch the drama unfold.

You will then experience 3 nights on the ultimate adventure under canvas with Zambezi Lifestyles in their mobile camps along the Zambezi River. Everyday is tailored to a guests' requests. An example of a day at Zambezi Life Styles is an early start in the morning, with coffee and some breakfast snacks before heading out onto the flood plains for an early morning game drive. If canoeing is on request for that day, we may do an early morning game drive up-stream from the camp, and we will canoe down-stream back to the camp for lunch. An afternoon siesta can be followed with a walk or game drive on the mainland providing up close experiences of Elephant, Buffalo, Eland, Zebra, Kudu and numerous other animals. Fishing is possible during the excursions on the river, either from the banks or off an island in the middle of the Zambezi river.

Head back to Victoria Falls for your final couple of nights and explore the area. There really is something for all the family. Have a delicious tea on the terrace at The Victoria Falls Hotel with the spray from the falls in the distance. Take an exhilarating full day white water rafting down the Batoka Gorge, go on the gorge swing or bungee jump of The Victoria Falls Bridge. It is also fantastic to get a birds eye view of the falls from a helicopter or micro light.

When to go

From mid May through to early August the days are warm and clear but the night time temperatures can drop below freezing. September through to May is generally hot in the day and warm at night, Hwange sees rain from late November to April.

The best time for game viewing is from August to early November, water is scarce, the bush has died back and game congregates around the pumped waterholes. Birdlife is prolific during the rainy season, and although the game has dispersed due to readily available surface water, this is still a great time to experience Hwange as the National Park hums with life.
