Average time to visit

Antarctic weather is a lesson in extremes. Antarctica is the world’s coldest, windiest and driest continent. During the summer months the winds abate considerably and the weather is surprisingly comfortable, averaging between 20 and 50F. Summertime also means 18-24 hours of sunlight which allows life to flourish for a brief summer period. Long days also allow extensive exploration by small ship cruise to Antarctica. Antarctic weather allows for a short season of cruising from November to March each year.

Itinerary

This is the complete Antarctic adventure. Discover the wildlife-rich remote outposts of the Falkland Islands, follow in Shackleton's footsteps on South Georgia, cast your gaze over endless King penguin colonies before exploring the glistening coves & towering icebergs of the Antarctic Peninsula. The itinerary we showcase below courses the traditional route, setting sail from and returning to Ushuaia but alternatives involving a flight from Punta Arenas, Chile to the Falklands are also available.

  1. Fly to Buenos Aires

  2. Days 1-3: Buenos Aires

Upon arrival to the lively Argentine capital, transfer to your hotel in the elegant Recoleta District, known for its upmarket shops, cafes that were the old haunts of literary greats and the famous cemetery home to Evita's grave. We've included a private city tour that will take you around the Buenos Aires' diverse districts from colorful La Boca, quirky San Telmo and the modern Puerto Madero. In the evening enjoy a fantastic culinary experience including the three must-tries: juicy empanadas, sizzling steak and a glass, or two, of Malbec.

Accommodation: Palacio Duhau - Park Hyatt Buenos Aires (2 nights)

  3. Days 3-5: Ushuaia

Fly to Argentina's southernmost city, Ushuaia and check into your hotel that boasts expansive views across the port. This tiny town is not just the gateway to Antarctica but also the beautiful Tierra del Fuego National Park. We've included a full day trip into the park so you have the opportunity to stretch your legs before your upcoming days at sea.

On your second evening, you will gather to meet your expedition team at the pre-departure briefing that's hosted in the hotel.

    Accommodation: Arakur Ushuaia (2 nights)

  4. Days 5-23: Antarctica

Embark the boat and enjoy a welcome dinner with the expedition team, ship's crew and your fellow passengers as you set sail across the Southern Ocean, bound first for the Falkland Islands.

Spend a couple of days in the Falklands, first exploring the West Falklands and the remote farms that have been owned and operated by the same families for six and seven generations. Step back in time as you visit one of these homesteads and admire the sheep grazing alongside colonies of Rockhopper, King and Magellanic penguins. Next stop is Stanley, the capital of the Falklands. Heaving with history and with a strong sense of community, the town is best discovered on foot.

Sail on and arrive at South Georgia, which many will be looking forward to almost as much as the Antarctic Peninsula itself thanks to the hundreds of thousands of King penguins that call it home. You'll also have the chance to follow in Shackleton's footsteps, visiting sites of historic interest.

Finally arriving to the waterways of the Antarctic Peninsula, the plan will be to explore as much as possible up close. This means aiming for the maximum amount of disembarkations, landing on shore or zipping out in the zodiacs. Marvel at towering icebergs, observe the bustling penguin colonies, kayak beside seals and whales alike and end your days toasting some of the most spectacular sunsets you'll see.

Return across the Drake as you reflect on your Antarctic adventure.

Accommodation: MS Island Sky (18 nights)

  5. Days 23-24: Buenos Aires

Disembark in Ushuaia this morning and transfer to the airport for your flight back to Buenos Aires, where you'll enjoy one last night in the Argentine capital.

Accommodation: Palacio Duhau - Park Hyatt Buenos Aires (1 night)

  6. Fly home from Buenos Aires
