Description

Explore Costa Rica's abundant rainforests, volcanoes and beautiful sandy beaches on this varied itinerary. Ideal for an active break, you can spend your days horse riding, hiking, white-water rafting, zip lining through the rainforest, snorkeling, diving and more. Explore pristine forests in search of spider squirrel monkeys, colorful toucans and vibrant tree frogs and unwind on an unspoiled wild stretch of beach.

Your journey begins in the central San Jose valley of Costa Rica, staying at the charming Finca Rosa Blanca. Set on a coffee estate, you can indulge in some superb food and visit a nearby cacao farm for some chocolate tasting. There's plenty to keep you busy further afield, including canopy tours of the forest, rafting and historical tours.

From here, head to the foothills of the dramatic Arenal volcano to Arenal Nayara, a firm Scott Dunn favorite. Against the backdrop of the spectacular volcano, you are surrounded by luscious verdant rainforest which just begs to be explored. Whizz through the forest canopy on a zipline, explore on mountain bikes, swim in waterfall pools and canoe the Cano Negro wildlife refuge looking for sloths and monkeys. At the end of a long day's adventuring, head to the natural hot springs or indulge in a spa treatment or two back at the hotel.

Continue your journey westwards to the Papagayo peninsula to spend five days on this rugged coastline at the beautiful Andaz resort. Boasting wild beaches, superb snorkeling and plentiful watersports, it's the perfect place to end your Costa Rican experience. Take to the waters to go surfing or on calm days, try your hand at stand-up paddle boarding, or visit the nearby Arnold Palmer signature golf course.

All in all, this is an ideal family adventure, taking in one of our favorite destinations in Central America. With a mix of wildlife, rainforests, beaches, great food and countless outdoors activities, there's something here to suit all ages.

Finca Rosa Blanca is located near a suburb of San Jose, close to the town of Santa Barbara. When to go

The dry season from December to April, doesn't necessarily mean no rain but there should be less of it, is considered the best time to visit Costa Rica. The 'green' season runs from May to November and there is more chance of rain during this time with September and October being the wettest months. It is important to plan well in advance for Christmas and New Year to avoid disappointment (ideally a year) as Costa Rica is extremely popular over this time with repeat bookers. Easter and during US school vacations are also best to plan ahead.
