Any time of year is fine for a visit except from January to March, when heavy rainfall in many areas can make some roads all but impassable, and when there’s a high risk of cyclones in the east and northeast. In general, the best time to travel in most areas is April and October/November. The coolest time to travel anywhere is during the dry season (May to October).
Average maximum temperatures vary from about 30°C in coastal areas (higher in summer) to around 25°C on the hauts plateaux. In Antananarivo and other highland areas, temperatures during winter can drop to 10°C and even lower during the night.
This itinerary is a wonderful option for those looking to combine wildlife adventure with secluded beaches and remote island hideaways. Perfect for couples and families, there is something for everyone. Discover private reserves rich in endemic wildlife and turquoise waters surrounding the idyllic shores of Tsarabanjina.
Arrive into Antananarivo and be taken to a quaint guest house where you can relax and unwind after your flight. If you wish to explore this buzzing capital city, a historic city tour can be arranged which will take you to all of the major sites the city has on offer.
Rise early to meet your expert guide and driver who will accompany you for the next few days. Leaving the capital, set off on a four-hour drive east to the stunning rainforest reserve of Andasibe, known for its large populations of Indri, the largest of all lemurs and recognised by their teddy bear like features. Enroute stop at bustling local markets, enjoy verdant paddy fields, and witness incredible scenery and rolling hills. During a stay in Andasibe, explore the reserve and discover the weird and wonderful wildlife endemic to the area. The reserve is home to a wide variety of lemur species including the bamboo lemur, black and white ruffed lemur and diademed sifaka all of which can be spotted on day walks through the forest. Night walks from the lodge allow for different sightings including the tiny mouse lemur whose eyes glimmer in the torch light. The forest is filled with constant sounds of calling lemurs and bird song and is a naturalist’s heaven with much of the wildlife only found here
Leaving Andasibe, return to Antananarivo for an overnight stop before an early morning light aircraft flight. This is the perfect opportunity to relax and unwind after your jungle adventure.
For the final chapter of your journey, fly from Antananarivo to Nosy Be Island in the north - the gateway to Madagascar's remote and deserted islands. From Nosy Be enjoy a boat ride across to the picture postcard island of Tsarabanjina with its turquoise waters and white powder beaches. As you make your crossing, keep your eyes peeled for dolphins and turtles that can be seen in the clear waters below. Tsarabanjna is a true Robinson Crusoe island hideaway making for a perfect ending to any adventure. Feel the sand between your toes, enjoy the crystal-clear waters that surround you and simply stop and unwind. Treat yourselves to a massage or enjoy a snorkelling trip to the marine reserve. Sample the local homemade rum, a malagasy speciality and dine on freshly caught fish each night as the sun sets over another day in African paradise.
Your beach time has come to an end, and today you will head back to Nosy Be in order to catch a flight back to the capital city, Antananarivo. Here you will spend one final night before you head home. Dependent on dates, there is the option to fly directly from Nosy Be onwards without a final nights stay in Antananarivo.
